Registration for 2009-2010 School Year
Thank you for your continued interest in Bishop Dunne Catholic School. We are truly blessed to have your support for our school. Over the last five years, interest in Bishop Dunne Catholic School has grown dramatically. The growth has created the need for some changes in our application process in order to accommodate the increased number of applicants. This year, more than ever before, it will be essential for new students to complete their applications by the March 31, 2009, application deadline. Please access registration forms at http://www.bdhs.org/parents/registration.html
We currently have 205 new applications through the early/priority decision deadline for school year 2009-2010. Over the last 6 years, we have averaged approximately 150 applications at the same time of year, with a previous all time high of 187 applications. Typically we end up with 275-300 applications for our 200 available spaces. Based on the current numbers, we anticipate that for the current year we will ultimately receive closer to 375 applications, yet we will still have only 200 available new spaces.
In the admission office we are acutely aware that DISD will be closing and restructuring four high schools (including local schools Kimball and Pinkston) at the end of the current year. We anticipate this action will even further increase demand. With this in mind, we urge you to to complete the admission process by the regular admission deadline on March 31, 2009. Applications submitted after the March 31, 2009, deadline will be reviewed on a space available basis. While we are pleased with our application growth, we certainly do not wish to leave out any prospective applicants from our extended Bishop Dunne family. As always, if you know others interested in Bishop Dunne, please invite them to contact Director of Admission, Mr. Richard Mullin, at 214 339 6561 extension 230.
Confirmation Class of 2009
Congratulations to Bishop Dunne’s newly confirmed! Eighteen students from the 8th and 9th grades were confirmed by Monsignor Milam Joseph at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church on Sunday, February 22, 2009. They are Molly Aldana, Jackie Arrambide, Bradley Boothe, Nicholas Boucher, Donnis Broussard, Alessia Cavos, Kathy Cruz, Nicholas Dennie, Marianna Eubank, Nina Gavos, Ruben Guajardo, Sarah Hyland, Sarah Massey, Cynthia Munoz, Ariana Owens, Daniela Ramirez, Will Smolka, and Sarah Steiger. Mr. Hurt and the confirmation class want to thank all the faculty and staff who helped out during this process: Mrs. Dailey, Mr. O’Sullivan, Mr. Martin, Ms. Bush, Mrs. Cooper, Ms. Zeske, and Ms. Dies.
Most of all, we want to express our gratitude to the parents. Monsignor Milam Joseph best said it when he told the parents in his homily at the confirmation Mass, “Thank you for saying yes to all the work it has taken to get to this point in your child’s faith development.”
GeoTech
The annual GeoTech Conference will begin on Thursday, March 5, 2009. Students who have expressed an interest will be invited to spend time after school with keynote speaker, Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson. Dr. deGrasse Tyson will give his formal lecture at the Museum of Nature and Science IMAX Theater at Fair Park at 7:00 p.m. that same evening. Tickets are $20 and can be bought online at the Bishop Dunne website, bdhs.org. Click on the GeoTech logo on the bottom left of the home page and follow the directions on the GeoTech site.
Parents are very welcome to attend the conference on Friday, March 6, and Saturday, March 7, 2009. The program of events is online. There is no school for students on Friday, March 6, unless students are helping with presentations and have been invited by the Technology Team, and there is no school on Monday, March 9, 2009.
Work of Heart Awards
Congratulations to our recent recipients of the Catholic Foundation’s Work of Heart Award, an award given to faculty and staff for going above and beyond in their duties and who exemplify Catholic education: Mr. Paul Wood joins Mrs. Marcela Garcini, Mr. Stephen Guerrero and Mr. Tim McManus as this year’s recipients. Congratulations also to the annual grand prize winner, Ms. Joanne Noller. Ms. Noller was given this honor for her work in setting up a very successful child care program, her support of Catholic education, her innovative teaching, and her caring and compassion for the students and infants in her charge. Four awardees are selected each year for the grand prize of $5,000, and Bishop Dunne has had two grand award winners since its inception two years ago: Ms. Joanne Noller and Mr. Tom Perez.
Outstanding Students
Lincoln Hill entered Bishop Dunne in 2007 as a junior, after her former school, St. Alban’s closed. She had dreams of attending Bishop Dunne since 6th grade, and after the news of St. Alban’s closing, that dream became a reality. Lincoln quickly found her place at Bishop Dunne as a cheerleader, and she holds leadership positions in several clubs and even started her own club, the Cultural Awareness Club. She says her goal is to unify, and to help people understand other cultures. Lincoln believes that Bishop Dunne offers great opportunities for students once they graduate, and that the school helps students become prepared for college. Although she has not yet made a decision on which college she would like to attend, she does know that she would like to become a psychologist. The best advice she can offer to future graduates is, “Try your hardest and it will pay off in the end.”
Joining the Bishop Dunne Family in his freshman year, Paolo Sintobin continues to work hard at achieving the goals he set for himself. Working with a Dallas based group called “HELPS International,” Paolo has traveled to Guatemala the past two years and hopes to return again this year. One of the things his group does is to install stoves invented by a staff member. He is very involved in school with the Student Council, the Ecology Club, and the National Hispanic Institute. He has designed tee-shirts for the Student Council and Ecology Club. Outside of school, he has performed in the Dallas Children’s Theater production of “EAT” and recently auditioned for an upcoming production. Paolo has been accepted to UT Austin, but he still hopes to be accepted to NYU – his first choice. He plans to major in international business and eventually hopes to take over the family business that his grandfather started. Paolo says, “The Senior year goes by so fast – keep working hard and don’t give up!”
Coming to Bishop Dunne from public school, Senior Amanda Berkhalter admits she did not like private school when she first arrived. Joining Dunne in her sophomore year, Amanda quickly became acclimated in both sports and academics. She was awarded “Newcomer of the Year” in track, received the Most Valuable Player and All-District awards in basketball, and was one of the team captains. Her family is extremely proud of how well she adjusted to school and commends her on her successes, both in sports and academics.
As for college plans, Amanda admits that she is undecided, however, states that she would like to attend a prestigious university. In her spare time, Amanda likes scrapbooking and poetry. Her advice to underclassmen is, “Never doubt what you are capable of doing. Set your standards high and don’t be afraid to be different!”
Look for more profiles of outstanding seniors in next month’s Falconer. If you would like to nominate a deserving senior, please send a paragraph about the student and his or her successes and achievements to Mrs. Kate Dailey at kdailey@bdhs.org. Selected seniors will also have their profile given to the local news media as well.
Parent/Teacher Conferences Friday 3 April
Friday, April 3, 2009, is a half day with early dismissal at 12:30 p.m. and Bishop Dunne Catholic School will be holding parent/ teacher conferences that afternoon from 1:00 p.m. through 4:30 p.m. Bishop Dunne is presently using a Web based appointment calendar that requires parents and teachers to register at the following Web address and use the calendar feature there to make and track appointments for the day. If you have not registered for the calendar yet, we invite you to do so now. If you cannot remember your user information from earlier this year, you may register again with a different user name and password. The system will still recognize your actual name and place your posts accordingly. You must have and use a valid e-mail address to use the service. If you enter an invalid e-mail address when signing up for the service, you will not receive notification of your account activation, further delaying your ability to access and use the calendar service. More information and explicit instructions and help features can be found on the site.
It is our impression that this service cuts down on wait times and helps streamline the process. You will find the calendar feature at the following URL: http://www.bdhs.org/parents/framecal/parentteacher.html
Please know that you can make parent/teacher appointments at any time with Mr. O’Sullivan, Mr. Johnson or Mrs. Dailey.

Dallas Public Library and the Express Yourself! Youth Poetry Competition
Sixty poems were selected from over 2,400 entries received for this year’s prestigious poetry competition. Three Bishop Dunne students were selected as finalists. Congratulations to 7th grader Lee Shaw for his poem My Own Little World; 8th grader Will Smolka for his poem I have a Dream; and 8th grader Daniela Ramirez for her poem Good Old Days.
The Dallas Public Library publishes the finalists’ poems in a bound anthology. In May 2009, a gift copy of the anthology will be sent to the finalists along with certificates of participation to all students who submitted original poems. The finalists will be honored at an Award Ceremony held in April 2009.
My Own Little World
Lee Shaw
Sometimes the world is boring and cold.
All I need is a pen and paper and my own world will unfold.
As I press my pen to the paper my story is told.
My tale has terrifying dragons, flailing swards, and stalwart
warriors dressed in gold.
And, of course, there is a hero,
a White Knight who will save the day,
as well as a hideous foe named Zak,
the White Knight will have to slay.
The White Knight’s sword
deals death to vile creations,
destroyers of vast armies
and friendly, peaceful nations.
Just as he slays the most hideous foe,
my mother screams, “We’ve got to go!”
I throw on my armor
and get ready to slay
the horrible math test
that I have today.
I Have a Dream
By Will Smolka
I have a dream to stop a monster.
Help from within comes from where it emerges.
A so-called demon urges
Vital signs to appear too late;
Eventually, there is not more time to wait.
After surgery, it might go away;
Doctors rush to save people each day.
Really expensive costs it takes;
Even unspeakable pain it creates.
After all, this can be cured or ruin a career for a dancer.
Monsters are big and scary, but this one is called CANCER.
Good Old Days
By Daniela Ramirez
My house and the colors: red, white and green.
I never was ashamed of the symbols and what they mean.
She worked for hours while he worked from sun to night,
Yet…you kept supporting us and kept on our light.
The food we had were frijoles and tortillas;
You never left us in hunger, and sometimes you wouldn’t eat just so we could.
You woke up earlier than the rooster’s call, not knowing what lay ahead.
Yet, you always came home with a smile - not a tear was shed.
God saw your struggles and helped your path;
Now…you relax and it feels like a long cleansing bath.
Through the good and the bad, I don’t regret the moments we’ve spent together.
I hope you know that they will be cherished now and forever.
These words may only be words on paper and have no real meaning,
But I appreciate what you have done for us through the working and the cleaning.

Please see Ms. Zeske in room 402 for questions and applications.
Bishop Dunne Venturing Crew
Bishop Dunne is starting a Venturing Crew! Venturing is a great opportunity for young men and women (who have graduated from the 8th grade and are 14 through 20 years old) to select, plan, and participate in exciting activities, leadership roles, and community service. Venturers take part in exciting activities such as: rock climbing, sailing, horseback riding, hiking, caving, scuba diving, orienteering, camping – both here and in other countries with Venturers from around the world. Venturing also provides you with increased opportunities for community service, teaching others, developing leadership skills, and for local, state and national level awards and recognition.
Students and parents are invited to share ideas, talents and friendship, in return, for fun and challenging chance to experience high adventure activities, to benefit communities, to develop new skills and increase leadership skills. The first informational meeting will be on March 24, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. in the library.
Black History Program
On Tuesday, February 24, 2009 Bishop Dunne hosted its Annual Black History Month Program. The program’s theme was “Those Who Pave the Way for a New Day.” The program honored the achievements of African Americans who had a positive impact on our great nation. Students (1st Grade, 4th Grade, 6th Grade) from St. Philips School of Dallas, also known as “The Miracle on Pennsylvania” contributed greatly to this fantastic event. St. Philips performed two acts under the direction of Tasha Ramdhanie. Their first act entitled, “A Change is Gonna Come” was an outstanding performance that took us though a timeline of the African American experience in the United States. Their second act was entitled “Celebrating 100 Years of the NAACP” which was a tribute to the achievements over 100 years of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Bishop Dunne’s Step Team, Drill Team, and Drumline also had exceptional performances. The program included appearances from African American leaders both past and present. Thurgood Marshall (David Pipkin), Condoleezza Rice (Jordan Alex), Dorothy Dandridge (Cydni Robertson), Jackie Robinson (Devin Evans), and Angela Davis (Lincoln Hill), just to name a few, were all recognized. Student Sydney Stubbs, moved everyone with her dramatic reading of “I Ain’t Movin,” a poem dedicated to Rosa Parks, and special guest from South Oak Cliff High School, Octavia McDonald read her award-winning essay. All in all the students gave a remarkable presentation. Dallas District Attorney, Craig Watkins, was the keynote speaker. His remarks were inspirational. He spoke of past and current challenges faced by African Americans. He closed with a challenge to all students; to celebrate Black History Month all year, to take race out of our conversations, and to recognize that African American history is everybody’s history. I would like to give special thanks to Mrs. Dailey, and the faculty and staff for their support of this marvelous performance. I would also like to thank the following people for their hard work and contribution in making this year’s Black History Program a success:

African American Awareness Club Speaker
On February 24, 2009, the African American Awareness club invited Mr. William Blair as a guest speaker. Mr. Blair is a native of Dallas and a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. A member of the Negro Baseball Hall of Fame, Mr. Blair spoke with passion about his days as a former player in the Negro Baseball League. He encouraged students to take full advantage of the opportunities they are presented, urging them to be disciplined in their pursuit of academic excellence and to continue to model those things that are right. As the founder and owner of the Elite News, Mr. Blair explained how he was able to overcome obstacles that were in his path. He said, “It took determination and commitment to overcome the hurdles that I was faced with. Today I am proud to say that those hurdles no longer exist.” Mr. Blair told the students, “hard work, dedication, commitment to God and doing your very best in school will allow you to be successful.” He closed by saying, “if you are disciplined in life you can and will be successful.”

Bishop Dunne Starts Green Program
In an effort to make the school more sustainable, we are instituting ways to make the school more green. All cleaning products from now on will be chlorine free and carry the “eco-friendly” label. Paper plate products will be eradicated from the cafeteria and we will have red, plastic (made from recycled plastic) cups and plates within two weeks. This will cut down on trash and paper use. All cups for concession stands will be hard plastic which can be recycled rather than Styrofoam and we will switch to glasses and mugs in the front office. All paper will be tree free – that is completely recycled paper. We welcome further earth-friendly ideas from our parents.
School Garden
Bishop Dunne students and faculty will begin a school garden project where we will build a butterfly garden, vegetable and herb garden, and re-invigorate orchids after they bloom. All proceeds from the garden will support our landscaping efforts and support making the area by the baseball field a protected and attractive woodland environment. We would be grateful for any advice or support from parents with green thumbs and donations of seedlings and native nandina or dogwood trees.
Student Council Activities
Student Council had a busy month of February and is working hard to plan more activities in March. Student Council members served as ambassadors for Bishop Dunne when our school hosted the Diocesan Speech Competition earlier this month. The competition was a great success. The Student Council sent some of its members to a leadership conference in Chicago, which provided a good opportunity for our members to further grow and develop their leadership skills.
If there are any questions about upcoming Student Council activities, please contact Mrs. Marcela Garcini, Mr. Michael Alfers, or any Student Council member.
Thank you from Nurse Price
Nurse Price wants to thank the people of the Bishop Dunne Community and let them know how grateful she is for their assistance. She sent out donation requests for hand sanitizer and tissues, and the students and parents responded immediately. She asked the teachers, staff, and students to participate in an incentive program to decrease the transmission of germs and received an overwhelming response. We believe that this combined effort as a community as decreased the number of illnesses and absences at Bishop Dunne. Thank you all, parents, students, faculty, and staff!
Remember as the flu season continues; please keep your child at home until he or she has been fever free for 24 hours. Everyone should try to eat well, drink plenty of fluids, and get at least 8 hours of sleep. Take care and be well!
Protect and Preserve Your Hearing
Parents and students, please spend five minutes of one busy day to sit down with your iPods and set the maximum volume level to a reasonable limit. Hearing loss with the use of any headphones and device can cause early and permanent hearing loss. Go onto your school Edline account and under the Content section, click on iPod. On the iPod page, click on Sound and Hearing. Instructions are available on how to set the maximum volume on your IPod for school or home. Please also refer to an article by Alice Park entitled:
iPod Safety: Preventing Hearing Loss in Teens.
Tuition Assistance
To continue their tuition assistance awards, students must maintain
an average of 82% and a clean discipline record. Records will be
reviewed after the first quarter and students may be in jeopardy
of losing their award if they are not keeping their contractual
agreement. Please be proactive in helping your student attend tutorials
and working with his or her teachers.
Conversation with the Colleges at Bishop Dunne
Parents and students are invited to our annual Conversations with Colleges evening on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, in the auditorium at 7:00 p.m. We will have approximately ten recruiters representing both public and private universities on a panel discussion. This is a great opportunity for parents and students to ask questions about what the colleges expect in an admission application packet and what criteria they are looking for to award scholarships.
For more information, please contact Ms. Keisha Brown in Guidance at kbrown@bdhs.org.
