Conversation with the Colleges at Bishop Dunne
Join us for a panel discussion with approximately ten recruiters representing both public and private universities. This is a great opportunity for parents and students to ask questions about what the colleges expect in an admission application packet and what criteria they are looking for to award scholarships. Urgent Online Education Program Notice for Seniors and Their Parents
Please review your student’s graduation credits. Each year there are students who wait until May to redeem deficient credits, causing a great deal of stress for all involved. Parents of any student who currently has deficient credits should have received a letter that outlined the deficiencies and registration procedures for the online classes designed to make-up the credits. There are currently many seniors who have outstanding credits and have either not registered for the make-up class or have not completed a make-up class from the fall semester. Please contact Mr. Copeland at hcopeland@bdhs.org or Mr. Root at mroot@bdhs.org to verify the number of credits earned by your senior.

Raise a Reader
Bishop Dunne has registered as a participant in the Parents.com Raise a Reader program. This program, sponsored by Parents Magazine and the International Reading Association, is a great opportunity for parents to encourage their students to read more. Beginning March 8, 2010, parents can visit the site at www.parents.com/reading/bishopdunnecatholicschooldaltx and register their children to participate. After a student is registered, parents can visit the site regularly to log the number of minutes their child has read. The program continues until May 31, 2010. Students can win gift cards to Barnes and Noble. And, the school with the highest number of minutes read per student by the end of May wins $5,000 for its library! A reminder will be posted for parents to register their students beginning March 8, and all students at Bishop Dunne are encouraged to read and record their minutes for this contest.

Flight Museum
On February 17 and 18, 2010, the 6th graders and high school students attended Engineering Day at the Flight Museum. Students listened to engineering discussions and lectures and participated in activities. Check out photographs of students having fun in science!

Black Catholic Network Scholarship
The Black Catholic Network will award (3) $1,000 scholarships to black Catholic students who graduate from high school in 2010. To receive a copy of the application, please contact Rita Garcia at rgarcia@cathdal.org. Deadline to apply is March 31, 2010.

Oak Cliff Lions Club Scholarship
The Oak Cliff Lions Club will award several scholarships ranging between $750 and $1,000 to 2010 graduates. To qualify for this scholarship, students must be a resident of Oak Cliff, graduate from a high school in Oak Cliff, and be a child, grandchild or sibling of a member of the Oak Cliff Lions Club. Angelo State University Carr Scholarship
This scholarship is for students who rank in the top 45% of the class and score at least a 1020 on the SAT. The award amount ranges from $1,000 to $4,500 per year. To apply for this scholarship go to www.angelo.edu/carr.html.

Being an American Essay Contest

Rose/Silverthorne Foundation Scholarship
This scholarship is for current high school seniors. Students must have at least a high B average, drug free and non smoker, have no dependents, plan on being a full time student in fall of 2010, plan on living on campus for two years and must be and remain single while covered by the scholarship. Texas Instruments Math Scholars Program – University of North Texas Dallas
This scholarship is for students who wish to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics with Secondary Teacher Certification at the University of North Texas Dallas. Applicants are to be ranked in the top 25% of their class, exempt from TSI for Reading, Writing and Math sections, have a minimum SAT score of 600 on math and 580 on Critical Reading or a minimum ACT of 24 Math and 24 English, and four years of high school math to include Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Pre- Calculus.

Leadership Forum
On February 27, 2010, twenty students from both Student Government and The Falconers Club were able to attend the John Ben Shepperd High School Leadership Forum on the campus of Southern Methodist University. The students heard speakers and participated in group activities and challenges designed to encourage and develop leadership skills. The trip was chaperoned by Ms. Kelly Bush and Ms. Kelli Pineda.

Bishop Dunne Service to St. Cecilia Catholic School
Bishop Dunne has partnered with The University of Notre Dame Alumni Club to provide tutors for St. Cecilia Catholic School. If parents are interested in tutoring young students from St. Cecilia Catholic School, please arrive at 8:45 a.m. at the St. Cecilia library where volunteers will be assigned a student to work with for two hours. St. Cecilia is located at 635 Mary Cliff Road, Dallas, TX 75208. The dates for this school year are listed below. Thank you for your anticipated participation.

The Tournament is on Monday, April 5, 2010, at the Oak Cliff Golf Club. Dinner, a silent auction, and raffle will follow the tournament. Sponsor Levels are $5,000 for a Title Sponsor: 3 foursomes, tee; $2,500 for 2 foursomes, tee box sign, banner and name listed on all press releases; $1,000 for 1 foursome, tee box sign, banner and name listed on all press releases; $460 for 1 foursome; and $150 for 1 tee box sign. Entry fee is $125 for an individual or $460 for a foursome, and includes golf, cart, boxed lunch, and dinner.

Play will be a four-man scramble with Mulligans $5 each (up to two/person). There will be prizes for top three teams, a prize for the longest drive, and a prize for closest to the pin.

Honduran Mission Trip
Please support the students attending this year's Honduran Mission trip. Two fundraising events are scheduled for March. Attached is the flyer for Mission Tamale - Ole. Pre-paid orders for chicken and pork tamales will be taken through Thursday, March 25, 2010. The cost for a dozen tamales is $12, and checks or cash are accepted. Order your tamales just in time for the Easter holidays!

The Honduran Mission Trip Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2010, from 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on the parking lot of Las Ranitas Restaurant located on 325 East Jefferson Boulevard in downtown Oak Cliff. Please bring your donated items that day or come by and shop from the "treasures" that will be available. Your donations are appreciated.

Proceeds from these two events will support the students who will be working with the villagers in Trujillo, Honduras, this summer. Some of their projects will include painting church pews, constructing the foundation for a chapel, building a concrete wall, working with the children in the villages and at the orphanage, La Finca. Partner with Bishop Dunne students as we prepare for this unique opportunity of personal growth and spiritual development.

Bishop Dunne Financial Aid
Aid has been awarded to those families with completed applications, and letters were mailed today. If you have not completed financial aid applications with the appropriate paperwork, please do so as soon as possible. If you are not sure which paperwork you are missing, please contact Mr. Mullin at rmullin@bdhs.org.

Application
Bishop Dunne Catholic School believes in providing need based financial aid for academically qualified students who come from financially struggling families. All Bishop Dunne families effectively receive tuition assistance because of the “tuition gap,” which is the difference between tuition/fees collected and the actual cost of education. We close this “tuition gap” with donations which benefit every Bishop Dunne family. In addition to the “tuition gap” donations, each year we are able to raise funds to assist our neediest families with essential tuition assistance. Financial aid awards are limited to the funds that are provided by the School’s fundraising, including proceeds from the annual Bishop Dunne 100 Dinner.

To request aid, families submit a financial aid application through a neutral third party vendor. Each family’s need is assessed annually by SSS (the outside vendor), and requires completion of a PFS-Parental Financial Statement. Families are then awarded aid based on the information provided on their PFS. This information provides the Bishop Dunne financial aid committee with a method of accurately assessing our families’ financial situations on a year by year basis.

Bishop Dunne financial aid committee awards need based grants on a scaled basis from $250 up to a maximum of $3,750 for middle school students and from $250 up to a maximum of $5,000 for high school students. We received a record number of requests for aid for the 2009-2010 school year. The adjusted average annual income of all families receiving aid for 2009-2010 is $37,800. Parents are asked to remember that Bishop Dunne offers need based aid only. If parents have any non-essential to basic life assets (such as multiple homes, a very large amount of home equity or luxury automobiles) at their disposal, our awarding formula dictates that they demonstrate a willingness to utilize these assets before seeking out need based financial aid.

The Financial Aid timeline for 2010-2011 is as follows:

For New Admission Applicants to Bishop Dunne:

  • Only accepted students will receive a financial aid award letter.
  • Only those families who have completed and submitted all financial aid forms and required documentation by January 31, 2010, will receive an award letter prior to the required new student financial commitment date of March 26, 2010.
  • Families completing the process after January 31, 2010, will be processed and awarded on a first come, first served basis while aid funding remains.
  • After the new student commitment date of March 26, 2010, priority awards will go to those students who have paid their deposit and who have completed the online enrollment form.

For Returning Bishop Dunne Students:

  • Families who completed the financial aid process and submitted all required documents by January 31, 2010, will receive an award letter prior to the March 26, 2010, re-enrollment date.
  • Families completing the financial aid process after January 31, 2010, will be awarded on a first come, first served basis but will be expected to complete their re-enrollment for 2010-2011 prior to learning of their financial aid award. After March 26, 2010, only returning students who have already completed a paid enrollment form for 2010-2011 will receive a financial aid letter. Please remember that our financial aid process typically takes 4-6 weeks from the time of completion of SSS form until the receipt of an award.

Additional Requirements for All Aid Recipients
In order to be good stewards of the funds generously granted to us for the 2010-2011 school year, all families who receive financial aid will also need to:

  • complete the Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return;
  • understand that parents who choose not to work may be assessed an average income;
  • include all parents, guardians, partners, or step parents’ income, including income from divorced or remarried parents;
  • understand that students may lose the privilege of financial aid if academic or behavioral standards are not met
  • participate in a positive educational relationship with faculty and administration.

The Financial Aid Committee
The Financial Aid Committee is made up of a team of people who come together in meeting approximately one day per month to discuss and award financial aid. To ensure fairness, the Committee is made up of team members both internal and external to Bishop Dunne. For this reason multiple calls to check on an award will not help or affect the situation. We do appreciate the serious need for financial aid for many families and the anxiety associated with its distribution. Please know we will send out award letters as soon as the Financial Aid Committee makes the award grants.

Appeals
Each year as school begins, any aid funds which are unused or returned to us are redistributed through our appeals process. To be considered for an appeal, families must fill out the Financial Aid Appeal Form available in our front office. The appeal is primarily designed to take into consideration any situations which may have changed since making the initial filing. While all appeals will be considered, those who have experienced a significant change in their circumstances since the initial filing will be given priority.

Friday Falconer
The next Friday Falconer will be issued on Friday, March 26, 2010. We wish all our families an enjoyable spring break!

Arsenic and Old Lace in April
This spring, the Bishop Dunne Drama Department will present Arsenic and Old Lace, a comedy by Joseph Kesselring. Originally produced on Broadway in the 1940’s, this work has become a classic of American comedy theatre. Two sisters, elderly spinster ladies living in Brooklyn, attempt to end the loneliness of their single gentlemen boarders with a rather unconventional “special recipe”—elderberry wine. Also residing in their large Victorian house is their younger brother, Teddy, who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt. When a long-lost nephew returns to hide out from his criminal past at his aunts’ home, the mistaken identities and double-crosses begin.

The show will be performed on Thursday, April 8, and Saturday, April 10, 2010.There will not be a show on Friday, April 9, due to scheduling conflicts with the building. Students are encouraged to audition on Monday, February 8, or Tuesday, February 9, in room 407 after school. Students who audition should prepare a 30-second monologue to present at the audition. Students who wish to work on one of the production crews will be asked to sign up beginning on February 10, once the cast has been announced.

Volunteer opportunities will be available as there will be materials and furniture needed for the set. In particular, the theatre department would appreciate donations of lumber, fabric, household items, furniture items, especially furniture that appears Victorian, and paint. If parents have any of these items for donations, please contact Ms. Boarman at mboarman@bdhs.org.

Middle School Track and Soccer
The time to join the following middle school sports is here: track, baseball, soccer and softball. Registration forms are now available on our website. The deadline to register for these sports varies, so please register early.

Middle School Basketball

Congratulations to our middle school girls’ basketball team and their coaches for winning the Dallas Parochial League City Championship Tournament for the third straight year. The girls defeated St. Thomas. Members of the team are Ekaterina Boucher, LaDorria Cole, Valerie Fairley, Alyssa Garza, Rachel Benavides, Alexandria Gulley, Talya Hosea, Stephane Jackson, Kayla Munoz, Kenya Robinson, Keodara Seifert, Rachael Shima, and Le’Bria Ware. Congratulations to winning coaches Terry Flowers and Larry Knight.

Congratulations to the 6th grade middle school boys as they became DPL City Champions on Thursday night, March 11.

Bishop Dunne 5K Road Race and Funne Runne
The date is set, so start getting in shape for the annual Bishop Dunne Funne Runne and Walk. This year, the event will be on Saturday, April 24, 2010. The Funne Runne and Walk will begin at 8:00 a.m. in front of the school. Please be on the lookout for the registration form and information that will be on the Bishop Dunne web page soon.

How can YOU help????? We are looking for help from sponsors through donations of Gatorade, bottled water, contact information for possible company sponsors, race day food and beverages, and volunteers to help with support during set up and the race, and with clean up. Spring Wrestling
Spring wrestling begins on March 23, 2010, so there is still time to join the All-American program. Bishop Dunne wrestlers past and present have earned ten All-American honors and one National Champion. For more information, please email Coach Guerrero at sguerrero@bdhs.org. Practices are after school at Bishop Dunne on Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. through 7:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. through 7:00 p.m. in the wrestling room.

Business Office
Below are some guidelines and helpful tips for tuition and fee payments. Please remember throughout the year that all tuition and fees must remain current. According to Finance Committee and Steering Committee policies, students whose accounts are not current are not eligible to attend classes, extracurricular activities, field trips, or retreats.

Class Fees – 2nd Semester
Class fees for second semester have been invoiced. Fees are charged based upon course selection by the student. Please make your payment on time.

Registration Reminder
Please remember that your account needs to be current in order to register your student for next year. If your account is not current, any registration monies will be applied to your outstanding balance and not for registration.

Dates to Remember

  • 2nd day of each month - the Business Office will notify the responsible party of non-payment to BD or TCCCU.
  • 10th day of each month - students whose accounts are not current at TCCCU will not be permitted to attend class or participate in any extracurricular activities, including athletics, retreats or field trips.
  • 14th day of each month - payments for balances at BDCS are due.
  • 15th day of each month - students whose accounts have a balance at BDCS are not permitted to attend class or participate in any extracurricular activities, including athletics, retreats or field trips.
  • 30th day of each month - payments are due to the TCCCU.

Texas Catholic Community Credit Union
If parents have any questions about their TCCCU account, please contact the credit union at 214 348 8670 extension 114. The TCCCU, which is located at 10103 Shoreview, near White Rock Lake, has a night drop box.

Payment Methods
Bishop Dunne Catholic School accepts cash, cashier’s checks, money orders, MasterCard or VISA for any payments. We can now accept credit cards to add funds to your student’s cafeteria account. We request a minimum $20 amount.

Student Names
Some of our students have a different last name than their parent or guardian. We keep our accounts by student name. Please put the student’s name on your check when making payments.

Returned Checks
Returned checks to BDCS or TCCCU are due immediately upon notification by BDCS or TCCCU. Two returned checks will require cash, cashier’s check, money order, MasterCard, or Visa to be used for any future payments on that account. If payment made on behalf of a student by a third party is returned by the bank, the responsible party will immediately become responsible for the tuition or fee intended to be paid by the third party, but not the returned check fee.

Tuition Refunds
If a student withdraws from BDCS prior to the end of the current academic year, the student and his or her family may be entitled to a refund of tuition for any unused school semester. Any unpaid fees or fines, including cafeteria charges, will be deducted from the refund. Additionally, there will be an administrative fee assessed for voluntary withdrawal from the school.

Volunteer Hours
Each family is expected to perform a total of at least 40 hours of community service for the School or to pay a $200 sustentation fee. Donations of items such as office supplies and bottled water count toward your volunteer time. If you are unsure of the number of volunteer hours accumulated or have a question about making a donation, please contact Mrs. Norma Echavarria at extension 247.
