Early Release on Friday March 6, 2010
On Friday March 6, 2010, students
will be released at 11:30 a.m. in order for teachers to attend their
professional development conference. This is our 22nd annual GeoTech
Conference which is considered one of the best specialty conferences
in the country for teachers to learn leading innovative classroom
technologies.
GeoTech Conference for Parents and Students
GeoTech College Fair
Students and parents are invited to attend the keynote presentation
on Saturday, March 6, 2010, and then visit the college fair set up
in the gymnasium. Several Texas colleges will have booths and we
highly encourage students and parents to spend some time visiting
these representatives as part of the morning conference. Schools
currently attending are Texas A&M, University of Texas at Dallas,
Texas State University San Marcos, Dallas Community College at Brookhaven,
Stephen F. Austin, and the University of Missouri.
Geotech Keynote Presentations
This year’s keynote speakers
are Chad Pregracke and Ben Osborne. As a high school student, Chad
Pregracke became increasingly concerned about the trash and toxic
waste poisoning the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers and started his
own cleanup efforts, ultimately leading to the establishment of his
organization Living Lands and Waters, dedicated to cleaning up and
preserving our rivers - http://www.livinglandsandwaters.org/About/chad.htm.
This lecture will be in the Bishop Dunne Auditorium Saturday, March
6, 2010, at 8:00 a.m.
Ben Osborne is an award-winning wildlife and
scenery photographer, who has worked with National Geographic and
the BBC, most recently photographing for the Blue Planet and Planet
Earth series - http://www.benosbornephotography.co.uk/live/ProfileDepth.htm.
Mr. Osborne has travelled around the globe and brings his singular
experiences to the conference. He was chosen as the Shell Top Photographer
of the Year out of 50,000 applicants worldwide. The Bishop Dunne
community is invited to hear his lecture at IMAX Theater of the Museum
of Nature and Science in Fair Park, on Friday, March 5, 2010, at
7:00 p.m. His talk entitled Dog Days and Lion Nights will
look at the challenges of filming the wild dogs in Africa’s
remote Okavango inland delta and tracking a rare phenomena when lions
team up to hunt elephants. Tickets are available online at http://www.bdhs.org/geotech/2010_registration.html.
Both presenters will be spending time with our students before the
conference to discuss their experiences, mission, and craft. Previous
keynote speakers include Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, Dr. Mae Jemison,
Dr. Spencer Wells, Dr. Jane Goodall, Dr. Robert Ballard, Dr. Sally
Ride, Dr. Michael Fay, Dayton Duncan, and Erik Larsen - http://www.bdhs.org/geotech/previous_10.html.
Online Education Program Updates
Please be aware that all correspondence
between the online staff and students is conducted through students’ Bishop
Dunne email account. Students should open Bishop Dunne accounts every
evening and correspond with teachers at least twice weekly to ensure
a successful experience.
The current list of accelerated online classes
for the summer semester is posted on the Bishop Dunne website and
hard copies can be picked up at the front desk. Please look over
these interesting “for credit” classes and encourage
students to register for the summer session. Classes can be taken
from anywhere that has internet access, so summer travel and education
can co-exist.

Registration for Returning Students for 2010-2011 School Year
Registration
for continuing students at Bishop Dunne for the 2010-2011 school
year will begin February 25, 2010, and should be submitted online
by March 26, 2010. All re-registration/enrollment for continuing
Bishop Dunne students will be via our online process.
In late February,
all currently enrolled families will receive an email with a link
to their personalized online registration. When the link is clicked,
all of the information we have on file will be displayed. Parents
will simply need to update any information that has changed, select
payment type, and submit online to Mrs. Brooks in the Business Office
no later than March 26, 2010. This is important for budgeting and
staffing purposes. Returning students in good academic and social
standing who complete and return their registration paperwork and
deposit by March 26, 2010, are guaranteed a space for 2010-2011.
The fee for registration has been set at $300 per student. Those
continuing students who register after the March 26, 2010, postmark
deadline will be assessed a $200 late registration fee, resulting
in a total registration cost of $500 for those registering after
March 26, 2010.
Financial aid forms for 2010-2011 are now available online. Financial
aid forms can be found at www.sss.ets.org. Families should complete
all financial aid paperwork to School and Student Services as soon
as possible. After creating a password, enter 4721 as the authorization
code to gain access to the application. Bishop Dunne offers aid to
families on a rolling, funds available basis. Notification of awards
will take place 4-6 weeks after applicant’s file is completed at SSS.
If using the Texas Catholic Community Credit Union (TCCCU) to pay
tuition and fees (excluding the registration fee) over time, the
first of ten monthly payments will be due on July 5, 2010. The TCCCU
will also be making their enrollment forms available online this
year. In order to meet the first payment date, TCCCU forms must be
submitted by March 26, 2010. By doing so, the Credit Union will have
sufficient time to process requests and mail the required payment
information. If planning to pay the upcoming year’s costs in
advance, all tuition and fees marked are due no later than July 1,
2010. To take advantage of this option, please complete the enclosed
Agreement to Pay Tuition and/or Fees in Advance form.
Tuition and Fees for 2010-2011
Tuition for the 2010-2011 school
year for the Middle School Academy is $7,500 and tuition for the
High School is $10,100, although the cost of educating each student
is nearly $13,000. The school makes up the difference by grant writing
and an annual fundraising drive among parents, alumni, alumni parents,
faculty, and friends of the school. Parents are asked to give as
generously as they can, according to their means.
The EBook fee covers the cost of all books for students. The school
will buy all printed materials and EBook access for the year. Class
fees will no longer be charged. Junior and senior classes will have
a retreat fee and seniors will have a graduation fee. Students taking
Advanced Placement tests will be charged a fee by the College Board
for the exams.

Bishop Dunne Financial Aid
Application
Bishop Dunne Catholic School believes in providing
need based financial aid for academically qualified students who
come from financially struggling families. All Bishop Dunne families
effectively receive tuition assistance because of the “tuition gap,” which
is the difference between tuition/fees collected and the actual cost
of education. We close this “tuition gap” with donations
which benefit every Bishop Dunne family. In addition to the “tuition
gap” donations, each year we are able to raise funds to assist
our neediest families with essential tuition assistance. Financial
aid awards are limited to the funds that are provided by the school’s
fundraising, including proceeds from the annual Bishop Dunne 100
Dinner.
To request aid, families submit a financial aid application through
a neutral third party vendor. Each family’s need is assessed
annually by SSS (the outside vendor), and requires completion of
a PFS-Parental Financial Statement. Families are then awarded aid
based on the information provided on their PFS. This information
provides the Bishop Dunne financial aid committee with a method of
accurately assessing our families’ financial situations on
a year by year basis.
Bishop Dunne financial aid committee awards need based grants on
a scaled basis from $250 up to a maximum of $3,750 for middle school
students and from $250 up to a maximum of $5,000 for high school
students. We received a record number of requests for aid for the
2009-2010 school year. The adjusted average annual income of all
families receiving aid for 2009-2010 is $37,800. Parents are asked
to remember that Bishop Dunne offers need based aid only. If parents
have any non-essential to basic life assets (such as multiple homes,
a very large amount of home equity or luxury automobiles) at their
disposal, our awarding formula dictates that they demonstrate a willingness
to utilize these assets before seeking out need based financial aid.
The Financial Aid timeline for 2010-2011 is as follows:
For New Admission Applicants to Bishop Dunne:
Only accepted students
will receive a financial aid award letter.
Only those families who
have completed and submitted all financial aid forms and required
documentation by January 31, 2010, will receive an award letter prior
to the required new student financial commitment date of March 26,
2010.
Families completing the process after January 31, 2010, will
be processed and awarded on a first come, first served basis while
aid funding remains.
After the new student commitment date of March
26, 2010, priority awards will go to those students who have paid
their deposit and who have completed the online enrollment form.
For Returning Bishop Dunne Students:
Families who completed the
financial aid process and submitted all required documents by January
31, 2010, will receive an award letter prior to the March 26, 2010,
re-enrollment date.
Families completing the financial aid process after January 31,
2010, will be awarded on a first come, first served basis but will
be expected to complete their re-enrollment for 2010-2011 prior to
learning of their financial aid award. After March 26, 2010,
only returning students who have already completed a paid enrollment
form for 2010-2011 will receive a financial aid letter. Please remember
that our financial aid process typically takes 4-6 weeks from the
time of completion of SSS form until the receipt of an award.
Additional Requirements for All Aid Recipients
In order to be good
stewards of the funds generously granted to us for the 2010-2011
school year, all families who receive financial aid will also need
to:
- complete the Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax
Return;
- understand that parents who choose not to work may
be assessed an average income;
- include all parents, guardians,
partners, or step parents’ income, including income from
divorced or remarried parents;
- understand that students
may lose the privilege of financial aid if academic or behavioral
standards are not met
- participate in a positive educational
relationship with faculty and administration.
The Financial Aid Committee
The Financial Aid Committee is made
up of a team of people who come together in meeting approximately
one day per month to discuss and award financial aid. To ensure fairness,
the Committee is made up of team members both internal and external
to Bishop Dunne. For this reason multiple calls to check on an award
will not help or affect the situation. We do appreciate the serious
need for financial aid for many families and the anxiety associated
with its distribution. Please know we will send out award letters
as soon as the Financial Aid Committee makes the award grants.
Appeals
Each year as school begins, any aid funds which are unused
or returned to us are redistributed through our appeals process.
To be considered for an appeal, families must fill out the Financial
Aid Appeal Form available in our front office. The appeal is primarily
designed to take into consideration any situations which may have
changed since making the initial filing. While all appeals will be
considered, those who have experienced a significant change in their
circumstances since the initial filing will be given priority.
EBooks
Bishop Dunne is now a wireless environment and the school
has had a transitional year with laptop and EBook technology. EBooks
are more interactive with our existing SMARTBoard technology, pertinent
to evolving information technologies, and more relevant to student
directed activities and to research based projects. Laptops and EBooks
are more cost effective than books in the long term, saving several
hundreds of dollars over the student’s high school career,
and furthering our objective in being a “green” school
with a minimum of energy and paper usage.
Digital versions of textbooks are identical to traditional printed
textbooks in content, in most cases down to the page numbers. Traditional
textbooks can become out of date in some subject areas, almost as
soon as they are printed, and are one dimensional interactively.
Printed textbooks can also be extremely expensive and it is alarming
to see how heavy so many of the students’ book bags have become.
EBooks are electronic versions of a traditional print book and are
an affordable and convenient alternative, requiring a laptop computer
or an e-reader device. Students access digital versions of textbooks
through the internet and will be assigned a unique login and password
to access their books. Students will not need to cart heavy textbooks
around or worry about leaving a textbook at school or home, as they
can access their EBooks anywhere they have an internet connection.
Students may also download chapters in PDF format for times when
they do not have access to the internet; they can still read the
text through a PDF viewer like Adobe Acrobat Reader.
EBooks are also more than a PDF or digital copy of the printed book,
as they offer interactive tools to aid students in their learning.
New terminology and vocabulary terms are linked directly from the
chapters to audio files that read the term and definition. Often
options are available for both English and Spanish translations.
The EBooks also offer interactive reviews that provide students instant
feedback on their understanding of the material they study. Another
tool available to students is the ability to annotate and highlight
the chapters as well as add bookmarks to important concepts, make
notes, save selected text, check online dictionaries and glossaries
and alter font sizes and styles. Students may also search through
the text and their notes using the EBook’s search engine.
Bishop Dunne will be a complete wireless and digital book environment
in 2010-2011, with the exception of Latin books and some novels and
poetry books. An EBook fee of $475 will be charged to all middle
and high school parents, and this fee will cover the costs of all
books, equipment, class costs and remaining printed books. Students
and parents will no longer have to buy any books or pay any class
fees at all throughout the year. The mandatory EBook fee covers all
textbooks, interactive computer software, electronic databases, equipment
costs, and remaining printed books. If parents have used textbooks
they wish to sell, we can help direct them to used book sales.
Netbooks
Students are required to have a laptop or a netbook computer
for every class. Students will be responsible for the care and maintenance
on their computer. Computer maintenance will not be provided by the
school. Therefore, we highly recommend an extended warranty and insurance.
If students do not already have a laptop, we recommend the netbooks,
which are small, portable, lightweight computers equipped with faster
processors, larger hard drives, and improved WiFi access. Netbooks
also have built in web cams and microphones and weigh about three
pounds with a battery life of eight hours or more on a single charge.
Please email Director of Technology Mr. Paul Wood (pwood@bdhs.org),
Education Technology Specialist Mrs. Christine Voigt (cvoigt@bdhs.org)
or President Mrs. Kate Dailey (kdailey@bdhs.org) if you have any
questions or need further advice on netbooks.
Earlier Start
We are contemplating an earlier start to the school
day next year, with classes beginning at 8:00 a.m. for the whole
school. This will enable an extra 30 minutes a day for specific tutoring,
advisory groups, class meetings, prayer groups, and Mass each Friday
morning. We are examining the best way to make the 30 minutes in
the morning the most effective and efficient use of our students’ and
teachers’ time.

Walk of Fame
Become a part of Bishop Dunne’s future by buying
a personalized brick for only $130.00. We invite you to purchase
a personalized brick for yourself, for your son or daughter, or in
honor of a teacher or loved one. This is a perfect way for a friend
of Bishop Dunne to support the school!
Donations Needed!
Kleenex, Clorox wipes, and hand sanitizers are
needed for the classrooms. If you are seeking a simple way to fulfill
your volunteer hours or assist your child in obtaining community
service hours, please donate hand sanitizer, boxes of tissue, and
Clorox wipes. Please bring the items to the front office and write
your donation down in the notebook at the front desk. All donations
are very much appreciated!
Recycle Cell Phones – From the Ecology Club
Technology is
everywhere and constantly changing. Wouldn’t it be great if,
as you got more and more appliances, you could recycle the old ones?
Many charities or third-party recyclers take cellular phone donations,
and you can often receive a tax deduction or receive money for your
donation. Five hundred million cell phones are no longer being used
in the U.S. alone, and less than one percent of cell phones are recycled.
Do your part by recycling yours! To recycle, donate, or sell your
cell phone, visit: www.gazelle.com, www.recyclemycellphone.org, www.mygreenelectronics.org,
or www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com.
Aside from recycling your cell
phone, you can reduce your footprint on earth by switching to your
local service provider’s voice mail system instead of using
an answering machine, unplugging appliances when not in use, and
plugging multiple appliances into a power strip that you can turn
off. Even though appliances are turned off, they are still using
electricity when plugged in. Before you go to sleep or leave your
house, make sure all appliances are off, including computers, and
unplug the appliances that are not in use. You can make a difference!
Stray Pets – From the Animal Advocates
If you found a pet
and are looking for the owner:
- Confine the pet. Use leashes and
pet carriers when walking or transporting pets and keep your found
pet away from existing pets. Put your safety before the lost pet’s
safety.
- Record a description of the pet. Include pet type (bird,
cat, dog, etc.), breed, sex, age, size, and color(s). Add a description
of any collar(s) the pet may be wearing and note the date and location
where the pet was found.
- Place temporary identification on the
pet.
- Begin the search for the owner right away. Contact area
lost and found pet registries, rescue groups, animal shelters and
animal control agencies.
- Call all animal control authorities
within the immediate and surrounding jurisdictions. If a report
is taken over the telephone and a record of the pet's description
is requested, provide only the following basic information: type
of pet, breed, sex, age, size, colors, and the date and location
the pet was found.
- Call all area veterinary clinics and hospitals,
animal shelters, and humane societies. In general, call all clinics
within a few miles from where the pet was found.
- Place ads in
newspapers and post and distribute flyers.
- We recommend that
the owner be told to present some of the following information
in order to claim his/her pet: Current rabies tag certificate,
Veterinary records, pictures of owner(s) and pet together in the
same photograph, etc.
Tech and Tradition
Chinese New Year
The Chinese classes celebrated the Chinese New
Year by attending Mass at Sacred Heart Chinese Catholic Parish in
Plano. After Mass there was a dinner and students enjoyed cultural
performances by various parishioners and the Sacred Heart Sunday
school classes.
The Chinese New Year was celebrated in school by
cooking lessons led by Mandarin teacher, Mrs. Juhas. The students
made Chinese-style dumplings and then enjoyed the fruits of their
labor.
2010 Prom Information
The Prom will take place Friday, April 16,
2010, from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Pegasus Grand Ballroom,
located at The Magnolia Hotel at 1401 Commerce Street, Dallas. Prom
tickets are $50.00 per person with valet parking included.
Arsenic and Old Lace in April
This spring, the Bishop Dunne Drama
Department will present Arsenic and Old Lace, a comedy by Joseph
Kesselring. Originally produced on Broadway in the 1940’s,
this work has become a classic of American comedy theatre. Two sisters,
elderly spinster ladies living in Brooklyn, attempt to end the loneliness
of their single gentlemen boarders with a rather unconventional “special
recipe”—elderberry wine. Also residing in their large
Victorian house is their younger brother, Teddy, who believes he
is Teddy Roosevelt. When a long-lost nephew returns to hide out from
his criminal past at his aunts’ home, the mistaken identities
and double-crosses begin.
The show will be performed on Thursday,
April 8, and Saturday, April 10, 2010.There will not be a show on
Friday, April 9, due to scheduling conflicts with the building. Students
are encouraged to audition on Monday, February 8, or Tuesday, February
9, in room 407 after school. Students who audition should prepare
a 30-second monologue to present at the audition. Students who wish
to work on one of the production crews will be asked to sign up beginning
on February 10, once the cast has been announced.
Volunteer opportunities
will be available as there will be materials and furniture needed
for the set. In particular, the theatre department would appreciate
donations of lumber, fabric, household items, furniture items, especially
furniture that appears Victorian, and paint. If parents have any
of these items for donations, please contact Ms. Boarman at mboarman@bdhs.org.

study art and literature in college. Jamie has been accepted to East
Central Oklahoma University, Hendrix College, Midwestern State University,
Stephen F. Austin State University, Austin College, and Southwestern
University.

Congratulations to all our students who placed on this semester’s

were inadvertently left off the Honor Roll, when the Word document
was converted to script for the website.

field trips, or retreats.
If you have questions or concerns regarding your account with Bishop
Dunne or TCCCU, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Sandy Brooks
in the Business Office at sbrooks@bdhs.org or
214 339 6561 extension 233.
