about this program, please contact Keisha Brown in the Guidance Office.
Winter Hydration
Staying hydrated in the winter is just as important as staying hydrated
in the hot summer months. The human body is made up of 70 percent
water, and, in order to stay healthy, must remain in balance. Hydration
with regular intake of water must remain a priority for students
even though sweating does not occur much during the winter months.
Dehydration can affect the fine balance of the body, manifesting
with dry skin, cracked and bleeding lips, headaches, colds, and/or
flu. Here are some easy suggestions to stay hydrated this winter:
drink plenty of water; minimize caffeine intake since it is dehydrating;
eat water-based foods such as fruits and vegetables, especially
pears, cucumbers and lettuce; and limit sodium or salt intake,
as excessive salt intake can lead to dehydration and bloating.
Bishop Dunne Book
Club
The Book Club will meet on Thursday, January 21, 2010, from 3:00
p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Library, with Mrs. Deborah Bogue facilitating.
The Book Club is open to all students. Students should bring a book
they would like to discuss with the group. Snacks will be provided.
Please email Mrs. Melanie Gibson with questions at mgibson@bdhs.org.
Tutoring
Schedule
The spring semester tutorial schedule is now finalized and students
are encouraged to attend tutoring as frequently as possible. Please
check the attached
schedule.
Online Education Program
News
Credit Deficiencies
Bishop Dunne’s School and Family Handbook states that all students
with credit deficiencies in the following disciplines - English,
Social Studies, Theology, Science, Language, and Math - must register
for enrollment in the required class for credit redemption within
6 months of receiving a failing grade, unless alternative arrangements
are approved by Mrs. Kate Dailey, Mr. Patrick O’Sullivan, Mr.
Mario Root, and Mr. Hill Copeland. The policy states that “if
the student does not fulfill the stated conditions by the beginning
of the next academic year, readmission for that year could be denied.” In
addition, if a student should fail an online credit redemption class,
that student must re-enroll in the class during the next available
online semester.
To redeem lost credit due to failure, Bishop Dunne students must
register for online classes with the Online Education Program. Registration
for the spring semester will begin January 27, 2010, and classes
will begin February 11, 2010, with late registration continuing through
February15, 2010. The OEP offers an individualized program
for students to regain lost credit. The classes are offered 24/7,
are self paced, and designed to meet the specific needs of the student.
Students will have the availability of an on-campus liaison as well
as daily online assistance. To register for OEP classes, please see
Ms. Sandra Brooks in the Business Office, or download a registration
form from the Edline homepage and send it as an attachment or call
214 331 6561 extension 233. For more information regarding OEP classes
or credit redemption, please contact Mr. Hill Copeland at hcopeland@bdhs.org or
Mr. Mario Root at mroot@bdhs.org
Middle School Online Education
Program (OEP) for Credit Redemption
Please be reminded that Middle School students who score below 70
percent in English, literature, religion, history, math, or science,
must successfully complete online credit redemption courses in order
to be considered for promotion to the next grade. Registration for
these online courses has begun. Please use the registration form
found on Edline, and/or contact Mrs. Sandra Brooks in the Business
Office, at sbrooks@bdhs.org,
or 214 331 6561, extension 233. Courses will begin February 15, 2010.
Please contact Mrs. Joy Gardner at jgardner@bdhs.org,
or 214 263 9244 for further information.

Where Do Plastic Bags Go? – an excerpt
from an article written by Paige Phelps, Staff Writer, for The
Dallas Morning News, April 18, 2008:
Try to imagine the colossal amount of waste we humans create on
a daily basis. Did you know, for instance, that the U.S.-based Algalita
Marine Research Foundation identified a huge trash pile floating
just beneath the surface of the North Pacific Central Gyre? It’s
a spot in the ocean where the wind barely blows, the current flows
clockwise and the ocean is often undisturbed and glassy, a leisurely
spot for a garbage floe twice the size of the continental U.S.
Back in 2000, the crew of the ORV Alguita, the Algalita Foundation’s
ship, set out to study the gyre and reported, “The low point
of our 6,000-mile voyage to the North Pacific High was the discovery
of an alarmingly large number of plastic bags in the center of the
North Pacific Central Gyre.” It took 10 miles for the ship
to leave the mess behind. That was eight years ago. In 2007, the
ORV Alguita expedition showed “a five-fold increase in plastic
quantities in the Gyre.” On Feb 23, the Alguita returned from
yet another gyre study expedition. Blogging during the trip, they
reported that they were “finding alarming quantities of plastic – more
than we have ever found before.” “The biggest concentration
we find is of wrappers from potato chip bags, food wrappers, plastic
water bottles and Styrofoam, and those start at your trash bin on
your street,” Algalita Foundation executive director Marieta
Francis says.
The Ecology Club reminds you to cut down on your waste! Choose paper
instead of plastic or bring along your own cloth bags when shopping.
Protecting
your Pets from the Cold - A Message from Animal Advocates
With winter here, temperatures periodically drop below freezing.
Following are tips for protecting pets.
- Keep pets indoors when the temperature dips below 40 degrees.
It is recommended that you keep your cat indoors at all times.
Short- haired dogs may feel more comfortable wearing a coat.
- When left outdoors, protect pets from wind chill. Prepare a dry,
draft-free shelter that is large enough to allow comfortable sitting
and lying down, but small enough to hold in body heat. The floor
should be raised a few inches off the ground and covered with cedar
shavings or straw. The shelter should be turned to face away from
the wind, and the doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap
or heavy plastic.
- Pets that spend a lot of time outdoors need more food in the
winter. Keeping warm depletes energy. Increase the supply of food,
particularly protein, to keep your pets—and their fur—in
tip-top shape.
- Routinely check your pet's water dish. Make certain the water
is fresh and unfrozen. Use plastic food and water bowls rather
than metal. When the temperature is low, your pet's tongue can
stick and freeze to metal.
- Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather.
A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold
and causing the animal to freeze to death.
- Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs, and
may be difficult to housebreak during the winter. If your puppy
appears to be sensitive to the weather, you may opt to paper-train
him inside. If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness
or breed type, take him outdoors only to relieve himself.
- Canines often lose their scent in cold weather and can become
lost. More dogs are reported lost during the winter than any other
season, so always keep dogs on leash when outside a fully fenced
yard, and make sure yours always wears proper identification.
- Do not leave antifreeze, coolant or windshield wiper fluid within
reach and do not let pets drink from puddles. These products taste
appealing to pets but most are lethal to animals when ingested.
So thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle. Also, keep
your pets on leash outdoors and steer them far away from any suspect
puddles.
- Check your car in the morning. Warm engines in parked cars attract
cats and small wildlife, which may crawl up under the hood. To
avoid injuring any hidden animals, bang on your car's hood or honk
your horn to scare them away before starting your engine.
These guidelines have been adapted from the American Society of
the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals cold weather advice.
Protect Your
Plants from the Cold – a message from the Garden Club
Water all your plants before the cold weather hits, as a dry plant
will suffer more damage. Water will create a thermal effect and keep
the ground warm. Cover all tender plants with a cloth. Frost Cloth
is available from local nurseries in various lengths and sizes to
custom fit your plants and flower beds. Any kind of cover will do,
but cloth is best. Plastic will cause a burn on the plants. Cover
the plants and bury the cloth at the edges. Make sure your flower
beds and plants are mulched well to keep plant roots insulated.
These guidelines have been adapted from Calloway’s Nursery. |
