Washington DC Trip
Juniors and seniors will have an opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. with the high school Close Up program. Please note that there has been a change in the schedule from what was previously announced. The students will now be in Washington, DC, from February 14 through 19, 2010. All the same exciting and unique experiences will be available during this week as well, but the price will be just a bit lower. Students spend Sunday evening through Thursday learning how our government works from an insider’s perspective. Highlights of this program include monument study visits, question-answer sessions with policy representatives from various agencies of the government, a Capitol Hill day in which students meet with congressional representatives and staff, and neighborhood study visits. There are also opportunities to visit some of the Smithsonian museums and other landmarks that make Washington, D.C. unique.

The cost for this program is approximately $1,688, which includes all accommodations, meals (except in transit to and from D.C.), air fare, and ground transportation. If the theater option is chosen, there will be an additional $37 charge for the tickets and an additional fee from $99 - $119 for one of the out-of-town Thursday options. This has always been a very popular program with the students, and participants have called it one of the high points of their high school experience. Once the group is established, we will decide on a few other options which may make a minor change in the cost. Students who take advantage of this opportunity will take part in a truly valuable educational experience that extends learning beyond the walls of the classroom. A $200 deposit is required for Bishop Dunne to hold a place on the trip, and a $100 registration fee is required when registering at the Close Up website. These deposits are due by October 17, 2009, and final payments for the trip are due by January 15, 2010. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Marylee Boarman at mboarman@bdhs.org.

Credit Deficiencies

Bishop Dunne’s School and Family Handbook (page 24 Academic Difficulty) states that all students with credit deficiencies in the following disciplines - English, Social Studies, Theology, Science, Language, and Math - must register for enrollment in the required class for credit redemption within 6 months of receiving a failing grade, unless alternative arrangements are approved by Mrs. Kate Dailey, Mr. Patrick O’Sullivan, Mr. Mario Root, and Mr. Hill Copeland. The policy states that “if the student does not fulfill the stated conditions by the beginning of the next academic year, readmission for that year could be denied”. In addition, if a student should fail an online credit redemption class, that student must re-enroll in the class during the next available online semester.

To redeem lost credit due to failure, Bishop Dunne students must register for online classes with the OEP. Registration for the spring semester will begin January 27, 2010, and classes will begin February 11, 2010, with late registration continuing through February15, 2010.The OEP offers an individualized program for students to regain lost credit. The classes are offered 24/7, are self paced, and designed to meet the specific needs of the student. Students will have the availability of an on-campus liaison as well as daily online assistance. To register for OEP classes, please see Ms. Sandra Brooks in the business office, or download a registration form from the Edline homepage and send it as an attachment to Ms. Brooks at sbrooks@bdhs.org . An appointment can be made by contacting Ms. Brooks at 214 331 6561 ext 233. Tech and Tradition

GeoTech Lecture Series Speaker – Avery Johnson
The GeoTech Lecture Series brings renowned speakers and authors to the school to meet students and inspire them with their philosophies, explorations, discoveries, and experiences. Previous speakers include Sister Helen Prejean, Colman McCarthy, Sylvia Nazarro, and Craig Watkins.

The first GeoTech Lecture Series speaker this year is Coach Avery Johnson. Coach Johnson attended Southern University, led the NCAA in assists during his junior and senior year, and was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the MVP of the conference tournament both seasons as well. Coach Johnson coached Dallas’ Mavericks to their best record in the NBA, entering the playoff as a first seed.

Coach Johnson has now teamed up with Just Say Yes, a non-profit youth education and character organization that equips youth to say YES to their dreams and goals as they say no to risk behaviors such as drugs, alcohol, tobacco, youth violence and teen sexual activity. Coach Johnson will be speaking to our students on January 26, 2010.

GeoTech Conference Mission
The mission of the GeoTech Conference is to provide a forum to inspire and motivate educators and students in grades K-12 to learn about the earth—its structure, societies, environments and their interplay—using a wide range of technologies. GeoTech brings together innovative presenters and teachers in all disciplines to share the latest in academic and technology innovations and to discover the importance of exploration, both personal and universal. GeoTech has been rated by the National Geographic Society as one of the most outstanding and successful educational conferences and consists of three days, March 4 through March 6, 2010, of professional development in technology, Geographic Information Systems, and curriculum in all disciplines.

This year’s keynote speakers are Chad Pregracke and Ben Osborne. As a high school student, Chad Pregracke became increasingly concerned about the trash and toxic waste poisoning the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers and started his own cleanup efforts, ultimately leading to the establishment of his organization Living Lands and Waters, dedicated to cleaning up and preserving our rivers - http://www.livinglandsandwaters.org/About/chad.htm.

Ben Osborne is an award-winning wildlife and scenery photographer, who has worked with National Geographic and the BBC, most recently photographing for the Blue Planet and Planet Earth series - http://www.benosbornephotography.co.uk/live/ProfileDepth.htm. Mr. Osborne has travelled around the globe and brings his singular experiences to the conference.

Both presenters will be spending time with our students before the conference to discuss their experiences, mission, and craft. Parents are very welcome to attend the GeoTech Lecture Series and Conference. Previous keynote speakers include Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, Dr. Mae Jemison, Dr. Spencer wells, Dr. Jane Goodall, Dr. Robert Ballard, Dr. Sally Ride, Dr. Michael Fay, Dayton Duncan, and Erik Larsen - http://www.bdhs.org/geotech/previous_10.html.

Girls’ Soccer
At the midpoint of the season, Bishop Dunne girls’ soccer team can be very proud. Competing in one of the toughest districts in the State with nationally recognized programs such as Nolan and Ursuline, the Lady Falcons have made huge strides. Highlights of the season so far include the convincing home win against Waco Reicher and passionate and hard-fought away games against Nolan and John Paul II.

At the halfway stage, a number of players have proven outstanding with their skill, passion, and commitment: senior Candice Price who has excelled in midfield; sophomore Jennifer Lyssy who has been commanding in defense; newcomer freshman Jessica Chapa who has made the left side of midfield her position; and goalkeepers senior Hannah Patton and junior Kristina Munoz. The joint top scorers on the team are a pair of freshmen, Chelsea Billups and Alex Davis, which bodes well for the future of the program. The team has eleven more games in the next four weeks; including home games against Prestonwood, Nolan, The Highlands, and Ursuline; so please brave the cold weather and come and support your Lady Falcons.
