H1N1
Vaccinations at Bishop Dunne
Mobile Vaccine Solutions will be on campus in the auditorium of Bishop
Dunne for an H1N1 Vaccination Clinic on Tuesday, December 8, 2009,
from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This clinic is open to all members of
the Bishop Dunne community – faculty, staff, students, and
family members of students. No appointments will be made. If your
forms are completed before arrival, this will expedite the process.
The Clinic will operate as follows:
- The cost of the vaccine is $20 per person, with cash or check
made out to Mobile Vaccine Solutions.
- Parents and guardians bringing children to be vaccinated need
to bring the completed forms with them to the auditorium. The forms
may be obtained from the email Nurse Price sent out previously.
Please email Nurse Price if forms are needed at yprice@bdhs.org;
- Students, parents, guardians, faculty, staff and family members
of St. Elizabeth School can arrive anytime during the clinic hours
to receive the vaccine. Parents of St. Elizabeth students must
be present in order for their child to be vaccinated.
- Parents and guardians of Bishop Dunne students who cannot be
present at Bishop Dunne on December 8, (working parents or parents
whose children car pool with another parent or take the bus home)
but still want their child to receive the H1N1 Vaccine can sign
the attached consent/waiver of liability and screening forms and
send with their student, along with payment. Students who do not
have all three forms completed and signed by their parent/guardian
will not be vaccinated. Parents/guardians cannot sign consent for
any child other than their own. Faxed or emailed consents will
not be accepted.
- Students who are age 18 years or older may sign their own consent.
- Faculty, staff and family members of students from Bishop Dunne
or St. Elizabeth can arrive any time during the clinic hours to
receive the vaccine.
- Remember children under the age of 9 years of age need to return
to receive their second dose of the vaccine in order to reach the
proper immunization level.

Mitre
10 Survey
We hope you have been enjoying and taking advantage of the online Mitre
10 Yearbook Ning. The Ning is your opportunity to contribute
to the 2010 edition of the Mitre, our school yearbook. As
promised, we are working on a print edition available by the end
of the year. After working with several publishers, we have determined
that in order to include all the memorable senior activities, such
as prom and graduation, we would need to do a fall release of the
yearbook. All items will be posted to the Ning as they happen, but
the print edition will be distributed in early September. The printed
edition will be full color and approximately 200 pages, and the cost
will be $50; the Ning will continue to be a free service. We ask
that you complete the very brief survey
on Edline, so that we can properly anticipate orders for the
print edition. Link to survey: https://www.edline.net/pages/Bishop_Dunne_Catholic_School/Yearbook_Survey

Washington DC Trip
Juniors and seniors will have an opportunity to travel to Washington
D.C. with the high school Close Up program. Please note that there
has been a change in the schedule from what was previously announced.
The students will now be in Washington, DC, from February 14 through
19, 2010. All the same exciting and unique experiences will be
available during this week as well, but the price will be just
a bit lower. Students spend Sunday evening through Thursday learning
how our government works from an insider’s perspective. Highlights
of this program include monument study visits, question-answer
sessions with policy representatives from various agencies of the
government, a Capitol Hill day in which students meet with congressional
representatives and staff, and neighborhood study visits. There
are also opportunities to visit some of the Smithsonian museums
and other landmarks that make Washington, D.C. unique.
The cost for this program is approximately $1,688, which includes
all accommodations, meals (except in transit to and from D.C.), air
fare, and ground transportation. If the theater option is chosen,
there will be an additional $37 charge for the tickets and an additional
fee from $99 - $119 for one of the out-of-town Thursday options.
This has always been a very popular program with the students, and
participants have called it one of the high points of their high
school experience. Once the group is established, we will decide
on a few other options which may make a minor change in the cost.
Students who take advantage of this opportunity will take part in
a truly valuable educational experience that extends learning beyond
the walls of the classroom. A $200 deposit is required for Bishop
Dunne to hold a place on the trip, and a $100 registration fee is
required when registering at the Close Up website. These deposits
are due by October 17, 2009, and final payments for the trip are
due by January 15, 2010. If you have any questions, please contact
Ms. Marylee Boarman at mboarman@bdhs.org.

Please keep cafeteria worker, Mrs. Fannie Clarkson, in your prayers
as she battles cancer. Please keep senior, Xavier Matthew, in your
prayers as he continues his struggle against leukemia and appendicitis.
Please keep Mrs. Tove Ovila, grandmother of junior Anthony Brodner
in your prayers, as she recovers from a fall. Please keep staff
member, Mrs. Diane Horton, in your prayers as she starts chemotherapy

and 2009 graduate, Alyssa Aquino, whose father, Jaime Aquino, passed
away.
Library Makeover
We are updating our library, making it a pleasant place for students
to be and modernizing the resources. A wish list of books will
be published soon for parents and students to help support the
library. In the meantime, we invite families to help with the beautification
of the library by adopting a fish for the aquarium. After our resident
fish expert, Mrs. Alma Keglovits, examined the tank, we are asking
for donations of the following fish for our tank: two African delhezi
polyperterus; four Australian archer fish; one medusa pleco; two
geophagus cichlids; six Congo tetra; and live and frozen fish food.
These fish were chosen for student enjoyment and the opportunity
to examine fish behavior. Parents and students are welcome to bring
in the fish to Mrs. Keglovits or donate funds for the purchase
of the fish. All families who adopt a fish will be recognized.
Koi Pond
Many thanks go to Ms. Kelly Bush and Mr. Roger Palmer for arranging
for a work day for the latest addition to our outdoor science classroom,
a koi pond. The pond has been carefully planned by Mr. Palmer and
the Landscaping Committee - Mr. Javier Alonzo, Mr. Michael Arrambide,
Mrs. Isabel Arista, Mr. Norberto Guillen and Mrs. Kellie Lawson.
A large group of students worked on digging the pond and bringing
in rocks and supplies. Thanks to Mrs. Lawson and Advisory Council
member, Mrs. Shellie Driscoll, for providing lunch to the hungry
crew, and to teachers and administrators Dr. Veronica Alonzo, Mrs.
Isabel Arista, Ms. Wanda Boesch, Mr. Chris Dittrick, Ms. Kristen

Thanksgiving
We wish all our families a happy, safe, and restful Thanksgiving.
The next Friday Falconer will be distributed on December
4, 2009.
The 13th Day
Based on the memoirs of Sister Lucia de Jesus, The 13th Day is
an Ignatius Press production retelling of the experiences of three
shepherd children and their apparitions with the Blessed Mother Mary
in Portugal between May and October, 1917, during World War I in
Europe and the Communist revolution in Russia. This is a great opportunity
to learn more about our Lady of Fatima, Mary’s message, and
an important time in our history.
Bishop Dunne is fortunate to have the site license to show the
movie with all proceeds benefiting Catholic education at Bishop Dunne.
The first showing will be at the Uptown Theater in Grand Prairie
on Sunday November 22, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 each
and can be purchased at the front desk or online at www.UptownTheaterGP.com.
In celebration of the Year of the Priests, we invite all priests
to attend free.
Future viewings will be held at Bishop Dunne Catholic School, starting
in late November and December with days and times to be announced
in the Friday Falconer.

Volunteer
Program
The football season has passed us by, but don't be alarmed if you
haven't earned volunteer hours as there is still time. Basketball
season is starting up with plenty of concession help needed. There
are also other opportunities to earn hours.
Volunteer
Requirements
Each family is required to give 40 volunteer hours or contribute
$200.00 to the school annually. Volunteer hours are accumulated the
beginning of the school year through May 15. If parents are working
with students at the school, they are required to have a volunteer
screening form on file. There will be an opportunity to obtain the
required screening through a series of meetings that will be held
throughout the school year. Volunteer hours accumulated over the
summer months will count towards the following school year. Parents
who have not completed volunteer hours by May 15, 2010, will be charged
a fee accordingly.
Please call Mrs. Norma Echavarria at the school office for information
regarding Safe Environment requirements.

Tech and Tradition
Update
on eBooks
This fall Bishop Dunne embarked on a new era of instructional tools.
We offered the option of utilizing digital textbooks for as many
courses as possible. Next school year, 2010-2011, most of our books
will be eBooks or we will be using online technology for all classes.
We believe that eBooks are more interactive with our existing SMARTBoard
technology, pertinent to evolving information technologies, and more
relevant to student directed activities and to research based projects.
Laptops and eBooks are more cost effective than books in the long
term, saving several hundreds of dollars over the student’s
high school career, and furthering our objective in being a “green” school
with a minimum of energy and paper usage.
Digital versions of textbooks are identical to
traditional printed textbooks in content, in most cases down to the
page numbers. Traditional textbooks can become out of date in some
subject areas, almost as soon as they are printed, and are one dimensional
interactively. Printed textbooks can also be extremely expensive
and it is alarming to see how heavy so many of the students’ book
bags have become. EBooks are electronic versions of a traditional
print book and are an affordable and convenient alternative, requiring
a laptop computer or an e-reader device. Students access digital
versions of textbooks through the internet and will be assigned a
unique login and password to access their books. Students will not
need to cart heavy textbooks around or worry about leaving a textbook
at school or home, as they can access their eBooks anywhere they
have an internet connection. Students may also download chapters
in PDF format for times when they do not have access to the internet;
they can still read the text through a PDF viewer like Adobe Acrobat
Reader.
EBooks are also more than a PDF or digital copy
of the printed book, as they offer interactive tools to aid students
in their learning. New terminology and vocabulary terms are linked
directly from the chapters to audio files that read the term and
definition. Often options are available for both English and Spanish
translations. The eBooks also offer interactive reviews that provide
students instant feedback on their understanding of the material
they study. Another tool available to students is the ability to
annotate and highlight the chapters as well as add bookmarks to important
concepts, make notes, save selected text, check online dictionaries
and glossaries and alter font sizes and styles. Students may also
search through the text and their notes using the eBook’s search
engine.
We have invested in making our entire campus wireless
and are currently upgrading the speed of our network. Students are
free to bring in their own WiFi enabled device for accessing the
internet and their eBooks. This includes laptops, netbooks, iPod
Touch, or similar devices. If you do not have one of these devices,
but are interested in purchasing one, we have some recommendations
as well as special pricing. There will also be netbooks available
in the library for students to check out within the confines of the
library to use while there. Computer labs will be open before and
after school.
Netbooks
Netbooks are small, portable, lightweight computers that have come
a long way in the last three years. They are now equipped with
faster processors, larger hard drives, and improved WiFi access.
Netbooks also have built in web cams and microphones and weigh
about three pounds with a battery life of nine or more hours on
a single charge.
We believe these tools, along with the advent of
more digital versions of textbooks will eventually reduce a student’s
35 pound backpack to a small ruggedized computer and case. Over the
past year we have been researching the various types of netbooks
and have done trial programs with the 6th grade middle school students
and a few high school volunteers, and the Technology Office is available
to parents to discuss recommendations. We have also placed our recommendations
in the News section of Edline.
Students will be responsible for the care and maintenance
on their laptop, it will not be provided by the school. Therefore,
we highly recommend an extended warranty and insurance.
Please email Director of Technology Mr. Paul Wood
(pwood@bdhs.org) or Instructional
Technology Coordinator Mrs. Christine Voigt (cvoigt@bdhs.org if you
have any questions or need further clarification.
Advice
on Buying a NetBook
The following are thoughts and things to consider if you are purchasing
a netbook or mini-notebook.
- Consider going to Best Buy or even Costco to look at the netbooks
that they have in stock. Check it out and look it over. See how
your child feels typing on the keyboard. Realize that there is
not a media drive so you will not be sliding in DVD’s to
add software. You will need to download software or add software
from a flash drive/thumb drive.
- Check out the battery life. In the stores they may not have the
extended life battery; it may just be a standard battery. Also
know that the more we ask the machines to do – wifi, games,
etc., battery life decreases, meaning that the power drains more
quickly.
- Once you have settled on the machine you want, go online to
check possibilities. Our testing machines were bought through Amazon.com.
- We have looked at the Acer Aspire One and the ASUS EEEpc 1000.
Both have 10.1 inch screens, feel comfortable and seem to be sturdy.
Our preference was the ASUS as the keyboard was bigger and the
mouse functionality of the touchpad and the left/right click seemed
easier.
- Both machines had 160 gig hard drives. That should be plenty
of space for what your child wants to do or store as far as data
for school. The ASUS had Bluetooth and a 10 gig cloud storage piece.
That may not be necessary, as we also have 100 mgs of storage in
the student file lockers on Edline that all students will have
access to as part of their Bishop Dunne education. The ASUS also
has Open Office, a free word processing and presentation software.
The ASUS advertises a battery life of 9 hours.
- Parents and students will be responsible for antivirus software
that is up to date, such as Symantec or MacAfee. It is very important
to not compromise on this.
- Be aware these were the only two models we tested based on our
discussions with other schools. Know that there are many models
out there and many choices and they are changing almost daily.
Prices will vary anywhere from $300 - $500 depending on options.
Some models that are being phased out will go for even less.
Please do not hesitate to email Mr. Paul Wood at pwood@bdhs.org for
further clarification.

High

Congratulations to Austin Yaeger for being selected to the TAPPS
Cross Country All-Academic State Team for the 2009 Cross Country
