Open to all students, the categories for competition include: Section A - Humorous Interpretation, Oratory, Prose, TV Commercial, Two-Man Improvisation; and Section B - Dramatic Interpretation, Duet Acting, Storytelling, and Poetry. At this first meet, participants may choose to perform a piece from either Section A or B, and at the final competition in the spring, students may perform two pieces, one from A and one from B.

The Bishop Dunne participants will be coached by Ms. Allison Myers, with assistance from Ms. Erica Barnett, Mrs. Vivian Toole, Ms. Kelly Pineda, Ms. Wanda Boesch, and Mrs. Sherry Nelson. Our Town on the Bishop Dunne Stage
The Drama Department is proud to present Our Town by Thornton Wilder on October 23 and 24, 2009. This classic of American theatre looks at life at the turn of the 20th century in the small town of Grovers' Corners, New Hampshire. As George Gibbs and Emily Webb grow up, fall in love, and get married, we see life lessons unfolding with a mixture of humor and sadness, but always with recognition of the experiences we all face. Students from grades 6 through12 have been working since the first of the month to bring this story to life.

We would appreciate your help! There are many items that would help us in our production, and we will gladly accept donations of materials listed below. We would also be most grateful for assistance in building some very simple set pieces or sewing costumes.

Materials:

  • Lumber - 2" x 4" lengths, 1" x 4" lengths, plywood sheets
  • 2 wooden garden trellises (not necessarily matching)
  • Silk flowers and vines or greenery

Fabric:

  • 4-5 yards of off-white or cream colored fabric
  • 3-4 yards of blue check (gingham) fabric
  • 3-4 yards each of different dark or other solid colors
  • We would also gladly accept old clothing such as men's suits, men's or boys' pants, men's felt hats, women's blouses, women's aprons, women's shawls, and blouses.

If you have any items you would be willing to donate, please email Ms. Marylee Boarman at mboarman@bdhs.org.

Washington DC Trip
Juniors and seniors will have an opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. with the high school Close Up program. The flagship program group departs on Sunday, January 17, 2010, and students spend Sunday evening through Thursday learning how our government works from an insider’s perspective. They will return home on Friday, January 22, 2010. Highlights of this program include monument study visits, question-answer sessions with policy representatives from various agencies of the government, a Capitol Hill day in which students meet with congressional representatives and staff, and neighborhood study visits. There are also opportunities to visit some of the Smithsonian museums and other landmarks that make Washington, D.C. unique.

The cost for this program is approximately $1598, which includes all accommodations, meals (except in transit to and from D.C.), air fare, and ground transportation. If the theater option is chosen, there will be an additional $37 charge for the tickets and an additional fee from $99 - $119 for one of the out-of-town Thursday options. This has always been a very popular program with the students, and participants have called it one of the high points of their high school experience. Once the group is established, we will decide on a few other options which may make a minor change in the cost. Students who take advantage of this opportunity will take part in a truly valuable educational experience that extends learning beyond the walls of the classroom. A $200 deposit is required for Bishop Dunne to hold a place on the trip, and a $100 registration fee is required when registering at the Close Up website. These deposits are due by September 19, 2009. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Boarman at mboarman@bdhs.org.

Pro-Life Fundraiser
Bishop Dunne will once again raise money to help support the Catholic Pro-Life Committee of Dallas. Beginning September 23, 2009, students should bring donations to their E-block classes. Donations in the form of cash or checks made to Bishop Dunne will be collected for two consecutive blue days, September 23 and 25, 2009. The E-block classes that collect the most money for the Catholic Pro-Life Committee will receive a breakfast in their honor. The money will be presented to the Catholic Pro-Life Committee at the annual Pro-Life Classic on Tuesday, November 3, 2009. For more information about the Pro-Life Committee of Dallas, please check out the website at prolifedallas.org. For more information regarding Bishop Dunne’s pro-life fundraiser, please contact Mr. Tom Perez at tperez@bdhs.org.

News from the Gardens
The Bishop Dunne Garden Club invites parents, teachers, and students to partner with Target and Tom Thumb to bring funds to our school gardens. Each of these organizations has a program to allow a percentage of everyone’s purchases to go back to the school of his or her choice.

Through Target REDcards and Target Debit Cards, we can Take Charge of Education. This month our school received $407 from Target’s Take Charge of Education program. With these funds we will be purchasing two composting tumblers to help us reduce the waste in our cafeteria and recycle our garden refuse. We want to make it easy for everyone to designate our school as a REDcard recipient. Our 5-digit school ID assigned by Target is 16214. If you would like to participate in Take Charge of Education but prefer an option that doesn’t involve credit cards, you can choose the Target Check Card. It links directly to an existing checking account, with all the ongoing rewards of a REDcard credit account.

Tom Thumb’s Good Neighbor Program offers a similar opportunity for our school. Since 1996, Tom Thumb has been partnering with non-profit organizations to allow customers to give back one percent of all purchases made with a Tom Thumb Reward card to the non-profit of their choice. Most everyone who shops at Tom Thumb has a Reward card and we would love to be linked to yours! Forms to set up new cards or to link existing cards will be available at our school, and cashiers at all stores can also help you to link your card. Our school ID assigned by Tom Thumb is 4123.

In other news, get ready for a fresh crop of lettuce, spinach and cilantro from the garden! Bishop Dunne students have planted seeds in our new vegetable patch and we hope to harvest in the next two weeks. We will be selling these crops and the proceeds will go Catholic Charities of Dallas to help needy people in our community.

Finally, our butterfly garden is growing and we need your help to make it beautiful! Several people have inquired about making a donation to the gardens. Please help us by donating healthy plants which attract butterflies, including: all verbenas (pink, white, purple and sweet almond); lantana (confetti, white, yellow and the red orange variety); pink and white skullcap; mint; rosemary; butterfly weed; butterfly bush; honeysuckle; and passion flower vine. We also need seeds such as: lettuce (all varieties); kale; cabbage; Brussels sprouts; peas; beets; cauliflower; parsley; cilantro, and wildflower mix. Other items we need are bird baths, feeders, and bird seed.

The Falcons went down to St Thomas in their first DPL match of the season. Bishop Dunne spotted the Wildcats a 20-point lead in the first half to comeback on them but fell short, 28-26.
