Diocesan
Speech Tournament at Bishop Dunne
On October 17, 2009, the first Diocesan Speech Tournament will be
held at Bishop Dunne from 9:00 a.m. until approximately 1:00 p.m.
Open to all schools in the Diocese of Dallas, we look forward to
hosting this event again, as it is a day of both competition and
fun. Last year, the Bishop Dunne team placed in all categories entered
and then placed again at the final competition. This is the first
of three meets to be held this year, with two tournaments in the
fall, and the final tournament in the spring. Open to all students,
the categories for competition include: Section A - Humorous Interpretation,
Oratory, Prose, TV Commercial, Two-Man Improvisation; and Section
B - Dramatic Interpretation, Duet Acting, Storytelling, and Poetry.
At this first meet, participants may choose to perform a piece from
either Section A or B, and at the final competition in the spring,
students may perform two pieces, one from A and one from B.
The Bishop Dunne participants will be coached by Ms. Allison Myers,
with assistance from Ms. Erica Barnett, Mrs. Vivian Toole, Ms. Kelly
Pineda, Ms. Wanda Boesch, and Mrs. Sherry Nelson. In addition, we
will have several other Dunne teachers assisting as judges and timekeepers.
The day at Bishop Dunne will include refreshments, snacks, and entertainment
for those participating and for the families awaiting the participants.
Volunteers from the African-American Association, the National Honor
Society, and the Future Business Leaders of America will assist coaches,
participants and their families as they gather at Bishop Dunne for
this first competition.
Dual Credit
The deadline to enroll in dual credit courses for the first semester
has passed. However, if you are enrolled in World History AP, Photo
II, Advanced Painting or Webmastering for the second semester,
it’s not too late to enroll! The Dallas County Community
College District's Dual Credit program offers qualified high school
students an opportunity to earn college credit while completing
high school requirements. Best of all, dual credit courses are
tuition-free!
- What Are Dual Credit Courses? Dual Credit courses
are offered in a variety of subject areas including English, social
studies, art, and technology. Dual Credit academic courses are
transferable to all Texas public colleges and universities and
to some private and out-of-state institutions.
- What Are the Benefits? Dual Credit offers motivated
high school students the opportunity to earn college and high school
credit simultaneously. As a Dual Credit student, students can save
money on college tuition by completing some college level courses
in high school and thus enjoying an easier transition to college-level
coursework.

program, students must be enrolled in World History AP, Photo II,
Advanced Painting, and/or Webmastering in the second semester.

Juniors and seniors will have an opportunity to travel to Washington

group departs on Sunday, January 17, 2010, and students spend Sunday
evening through Thursday learning how our government works from
an insider’s perspective. They will return home on Friday,
January 22, 2010. Highlights of this program include monument study
visits, question-answer sessions with policy representatives from
various agencies of the government, a Capitol Hill day in which
students meet with congressional representatives and staff, and
neighborhood study visits. There are also opportunities to visit
some of the Smithsonian museums and other landmarks that make Washington,
D.C. unique.
The cost for this program is approximately $1598, which includes
all accommodations, meals (except in transit to and from D.C.), air
fare, and ground transportation. If the theater option is chosen,
there will be an additional $37 charge for the tickets and an additional
fee from $99 - $119 for one of the out-of-town Thursday options.
This has always been a very popular program with the students, and
participants have called it one of the high points of their high
school experience. Once the group is established, we will decide
on a few other options which may make a minor change in the cost.
Students who take advantage of this opportunity will take part in
a truly valuable educational experience that extends learning beyond
the walls of the classroom. A $200 deposit is required for Bishop
Dunne to hold a place on the trip, and a $100 registration fee is
required when registering at the Close Up website. These deposits
are due by September 19, 2009. If you have any questions, please

More specific parameters can be found on your son or daughter’s
Edline page. A couple of ongoing service opportunities include cafeteria
assistance and athletic assistance.
- In the cafeteria, we are asking some student volunteers to help
encourage the students to clean-up after themselves after lunch
by mobilizing the lunch waste receptacles and clean and straighten
the tables afterwards. This would take place during the last 5-10
minutes of their lunch period and they would earn an hour of service
by doing the service for a week.
- Coach Davis is looking for volunteers for the athletic program
to assist in concessions, in athletic field set-up or take down,
clean up, and a few other necessary odd jobs needed.
If students would like to assist in the cafeteria during lunch,
please direct them to see Coach Hawthorne during lunch. If students
would like to assist in the athletic department, please direct them
to see Coach Davis. Other service opportunities are posted on the
wall immediately to the left of the bookstore in the 500 hall. If
you have any questions about the service program, please contact

Think Pink: a Volley for the
Cure
Erin and Sheri Mathis are co-chairing a Canterbury Breast Cancer
fundraising event in mid-October: Think
Pink: a Volley for the Cure. The Canterbury Episcopal
School varsity volleyball team has challenged Bishop Dunne’s
varsity volleyball team to play a non-district exhibition game on
October 17, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. at the Canterbury Episcopal School
at 1708 N. Westmoreland, DeSoto. This will be a night of friendly
competition and will include several other fun activities, including
pink food and drinks, games, contests, face painting and more. There
will even be an exhibition game between Canterbury parents and Bishop
Dunne parents.
This event will raise funds for breast cancer awareness, and mammograms
for those who cannot afford them. 100% of net proceeds raised will
be donated to Charlton Methodist Women’s Center and The Bridge,
a Dallas area non-profit which exists to bridge the barriers that
many face in finding and fighting breast cancer. The Bridge also
funds mammograms for those who cannot afford them.
The New England Journal of Medicine in July 1993 stated, "Women
without private health care insurance who have breast cancer receive
this diagnosis later and die sooner than privately insured women
with breast cancer."
Race for the Cure
Congratulations to faculty member and cancer survivor, Mrs. Joy Gardner,
who completed the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, along with

Many families have two accounts. One is with the school and the other
is with the Texas Catholic Community Credit Union or TCCCU. All
families have one account at Bishop Dunne for all items that are
paid directly to the school, such as fees for classes, after school
care, bus, testing, retreat, graduation, and lost library books.
The Business Office handles these accounts. Additionally, many
families also have an account at the TCCCU to finance tuition and
the student activity, the facility and the technology fees.
Texas Catholic Community Credit
Union
If monthly payments are not received at the TCCCU by the due date,
the Business Office will attempt to contact the responsible party.
If payment has not been received by the TCCCU by 8 a.m. on the 16th
day of the month, students are not eligible to attend classes or
participate in any extracurricular activities until the delinquent
amount has been paid in full. If parents have any questions about
their TCCCU account, please contact the credit union at 214 348 8670.
Roy Adams at extension 106 is available to assist you. The TCCCU,
which is located at 10103 Shoreview, near White Rock Lake, has a
night drop box.
The tuition loan rate for parent loans for the 2009-2010 school
year is 7%. An automatic draft from your checking account at another
bank to TCCCU will result in a rate of 6.75%. An automatic draft
from a checking account at TCCCU will result in a rate of 6%. An
automatic draft option has an advantage in convenience and saving
time.
Payment Methods
Bishop Dunne Catholic School accepts cash, cashier’s checks,
money orders, MasterCard or VISA for any payments. We can now accept
credit cards to add funds to your student’s cafeteria account.
We request a minimum $20 amount.
Student Names
Some of our students have a different last name than their parent
or guardian. We keep our accounts by student name. Please indicate
on your checks the student’s name for whom you are making
payments.
Returned Checks
Payment of a returned check which was presented to BDCS and the related
fee are due immediately upon notification by BDCS. If payment of
fees on any student account is delayed twice due to checks returned
by the bank, the Business Office will require that cash, cashier’s
check, money order, MasterCard or Visa be used for any future payments
on that account. If payment made on behalf of a student by a third
party is returned by the bank, the responsible party will immediately
become responsible for the tuition or fee intended to be paid by
the third party, but not the returned check fee. Payment of a returned
check which was presented to the TCCCU and the returned check fees
are due immediately upon notification by the TCCCU or BDCS. Payment
of the amount of the check and any fees assessed must be paid in
full to the TCCCU with cash, cashier’s check, or money order
before the student will be allowed to return to class. Two returned
checks at the TCCCU will require that all future payments to the
TCCCU and to BDCS be made with cash, cashier’s check, or
money order to TCCCU or cash, cashier’s check, money order,
MasterCard or Visa to BDCS.
Tuition Refunds
If a student withdraws from BDCS prior to the end of the current
academic year, the student and his or her family may be entitled
to a refund of tuition for any unused school semester. Any unpaid
fees or fines, including cafeteria, will be deducted from the refund.
Additionally, there will be an administrative fee assessed for
voluntary withdrawal from the school.
Volunteer
Hours
Each family is expected to perform a total of at least 40 hours of
community service for the School or to pay a $200 sustentation fee.
Donations of items such as office supplies and bottled water count

hours accumulated or have a question about making a donation, please
contact Mrs. Norma Echavarria at extension 247.
