Tutorials
Attached, you will find the Master Tutorial Schedule and the email and voice mail list for all Bishop Dunne personnel. All teachers at Bishop Dunne are available for tutoring, and the schedule will allow your student to plan sessions and record them in his or her planner. Email is a preferable form of communication as teachers can access email more readily.

Wireless Environment
The wireless environment is complete and we ask our students to make sure that their computers have an active and updated anti-virus software program on the machine. This website, http://www.avg.com, has a free for personal use anti-virus patch available. Anti-virus mainly refers to Windows computers not Mac (Apple).

Parents may wish to set up a SCHOOL user on the machine so that there are fewer difficulties going back and forth from home to school since we also have proxy settings that have to be put into the browser.

Once your child is equipped with laptop computer, he or she needs to see Mr. Wood in the Technology Office for computer setup.

Please check your child’s machine for any music sharing software such as Lime Wire, which creates virus issues. If your child has been using this software/site, please have the computer checked to make sure it is clean, as the damage can be harmful to the entire network.

Close Up in Washington DC
For the fifth year in a row, high school juniors and seniors who are interested in politics, government, or history have the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. with the Close Up program the week of January 17 through 22, 2010. The group will depart on Sunday and begin workshops with students from across the nation that evening. On Monday and Tuesday, students will be out and about in the nation’s capital with walking workshops at the various memorials and activities that link the memorials to current issues in the news. The evenings bring activities from mock congressional committee work to domestic policy debates and discussions on hot topics in the news. Wednesday is Capitol Hill day which gives the students the chance to meet with members of the staffs of their congressional representatives, and maybe the representatives themselves. Wednesday evening offers a group choice of theatre night at the Kennedy Center or a nighttime monument tour. Thursday is a day to discover Washington with an opportunity to return to some of the sights in the city and spend more time there, or go with Close Up staff to see some sights around the area such as Williamsburg, Gettysburg, Mt. Vernon or Philadelphia. The choice for this day and for the theatre night will be made once the student group is established.

The cost for the trip, which includes all travel expenses, hotels, meals, and everything except souvenirs is $1,598 plus a $200 deposit to Bishop Dunne to reserve a spot. If we choose to take the theatre option there will be an additional $37 charge added on for the tickets and an additional fee from $99 - $119 for one of the out-of-town Thursday options. This has been a life-changing experience for previous Bishop Dunne students and they describe it as one of the high points of their high school careers. Deposits are due by September 19, 2009, and final payments for the trip are due by December 18, 2009. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Marylee Boarman at mboarman@bdhs.org.

Catholic Pro-Life Committee Coming to Bishop Dunne
Middle School On September 24, 2009, three speakers from the Catholic Pro-Life Committee will come to Bishop Dunne to address our middle school students. Parents will receive a letter from Mrs. Nelson to inform them of the date and time of the speakers.

Our 7th and 8th graders will hear a program on chastity which will focus on human sexuality and how it affects our body, mind, and soul. The emphasis of the talk will be on God’s gift of sexuality and the beauty we experience when it is correctly appreciated. The 7th and 8th graders will be separated by gender to enable the students to speak and ask questions more comfortably.

Our 6th graders will hear a talk on character which will discuss what it means to be a good person and the qualities of a good friend. This will be an open discussion allowing all students to participate and be involved. The speaker will also include a brief discussion of the virtue of chastity.

Think Pink: a Volley for the Cure
Erin and Sheri Mathis are co-chairing a Canterbury Breast Cancer fundraising event in mid-October: Think Pink: a Volley for the Cure. The Canterbury Episcopal School varsity volleyball team has challenged Bishop Dunne’s varsity volleyball team to play a non-district exhibition game on October 17, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. at the Canterbury Episcopal School at 1708 N. Westmoreland, DeSoto. This will be a night of friendly competition and will include several other fun activities, including pink food and drinks, games, contests, face painting and more. There will even be an exhibition game between Canterbury parents and Bishop Dunne parents.

This event will raise funds for breast cancer awareness, and mammograms for those who cannot afford them. 100% of net proceeds raised will be donated to Charlton Methodist Women’s Center and The Bridge, a Dallas area non-profit which exists to bridge the barriers that many face in finding and fighting breast cancer. The Bridge also funds mammograms for those who cannot afford them.

The New England Journal of Medicine in July 1993 stated, "Women without private health care insurance who have breast cancer receive this diagnosis later and die sooner than privately insured women with breast cancer."

Nationally Renowned Activist, Sonia Nazario, Is Visiting Bishop Dunne

Parents’ Role in Athletics
As many of you may have read in The Texas Catholic, the mission for youth sports in a Catholic environment is to help develop the student athlete physically, spiritually, mentally, morally, and socially. At Bishop Dunne, all of our coaches go through either the Play like a Champion training or the Coaches’ and Officials’ Positive Expectations (COPE) training program. As parents we invite you to visit the PLC website at http://www.playlikeachampion.org to see how parents can support their student athletes and coaches, as well as to read up on different trends in middle and high school athletics across the U.S.

Please help us to create a safe supportive environment where our students are given the opportunity to excel in all aspects of their lives while gaining character development that will stay with them for a lifetime. Thank you for partnering with us this year. Below are copies of our athletic mission statement and our spectators’ code to help our student athletes to have a great year.

Athletic Mission Statement
The Bishop Dunne Athletic Department is committed to creating a nurturing environment filled with mutual respect and unity for all students, and strives to instill Christian values while encouraging the spiritual, intellectual, social, physical, and emotional development of our scholar athlete. The Athletic Department believes that athletics is an integral part of the school's educational program since it provides experiences that will help young people to grow spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Our goal is to educate our scholar athletes in the importance of teamwork and self commitment. Our desire is to see his or her hard work and commitment on the field or court transferred to the classroom. The members of the Athletic Department strive for collaboration and communication so that coaches and scholar athletes can support and encourage one another to fulfill their potential.

Sports Events - Spectators’ Code
To make sports events more enjoyable and less stressful, the following code of behavior is in place for sports spectators. Adults and students who violate this code will be asked to leave games and restricted from further entry. Any act of disrespect from a parent/guardian/adult or student to a teacher, coach, or member of the school staff will be handled on an individual basis and may call for that person being banned from further athletic events and activities for a calendar year from the date of incident. Students are subject to disciplinary action, including separation from the school.

  1. Bishop Dunne sports events are for our students - their personal growth, development of skills and for fun.
  2. Spectators are not to use profane, disrespectful, or racist language and are not to harass players, coaches, officials or other spectators.
  3. Respect is expected for the team and the team’s opponents. All visiting teams are to be treated with the utmost hospitality.
  4. Athletes and coaches are not to be ridiculed or scolded during competition or practices.
  5. Violence in any form will not be tolerated.
  6. Verbal abuse is not tolerated.
  7. Officials’ decisions are to be respected.
  8. Spectators are to respect the requests of School faculty or staff at any School function regarding spectator behavior.

Requirements for Financial Aid
Student requirements for financial aid include but are not limited to maintaining a solid grade point average and a good discipline record. We evaluate each student at the end of October to determine whether financial aid will continue for the rest of the year. Please remind your student how important it is to maintain the required grades and a good discipline record so that tuition assistance will not be withdrawn after October.

Bishop Dunne families must complete a minimum of 40 hours of community service and parents are expected to be educational partners with teachers and administration, fully supporting faculty and administration.
