Winston Science Competition
Our science department at Bishop Dunne strongly encourages all students to participate in one or several events. Please click here to visit the website for details: http://www.winstonscience.org/wsci/
Winston Science is a series of events designed to help motivate students in the sciences. The students enter challenging competitions, focusing on creativity and team problem-solving, and they have opportunities to work side by side with leading scientists. The students are also able to attend outstanding science presentations and demonstrations and stimulating displays and tours.
If students are interested in signing up for any of these events, please print out an application form and bring it to your child's science teacher. If it is a team event, please list all the students’ names. There is a minimal fee of $5 per child and he or she may enter as many events as he or she wishes.
We are proud to send our students every year, and even more excited to report that they often place in the top three places. The deadline varies on the event, so please open the application on the website for specific dates. If you have any questions, please email Dr. Alonzo, valonzo@bdhs.org
Poetry Contest
Four of Mrs. Toole’s 2008-2009 Literature 8 students received a letter from The American Library of Poetry this summer, informing them that their submitted poem was officially registered in The American Library of Poetry 2009 Student Poetry Contest. The winner will be chosen after September 30, 2009. The American Library of Poetry also offered to publish the students’ selected poems in a new book entitled Inspired, scheduled for release this fall. Please congratulate last year’s 8th graders – this year’s 9th graders – Naomi Alexander, Mario Baez, Devin Hall and Will Smolka. Additional congratulations to Will Smolka, whose “I Have a Dream” poem was also chosen as a finalist in the 2008-2009 Dallas Public Library’s 13th Annual Express Yourself Contest.
Discipline
Thank you for your patience as we work through our after school pick up. We have added an additional third lane to ease the traffic flow. As always, our main concern is the safety of our students.
Thank you for supporting our efforts in teaching our students to model Christ. We are off to a wonderful start in discipline and will need your continued support for our success throughout the year. Please remember that our discipline report will be sent out once a week. Contact Mr. Walter Johnson at ext. 228 if you need to set up an appointment to discuss your child's discipline infraction.
Please remember that on Mondays and Wednesdays students are to be dressed in their Mass Uniforms.
Parking Permits
All students who drive a vehicle to school and park on our campus must register their vehicles with the Director of Students’ Office by Friday, September 4, 2009. Students must attach a copy of a valid Texas driver's license and a copy of current insurance to the parking registration form. Parking registration forms are located in the Director of Student's Office. Each student will then be issued a parking permit to be placed on the rear window. All unauthorized vehicles not displaying the Bishop Dunne parking permit will be towed.
A Note on Uniforms from the Discipline Coordinators
Parents, please pay attention to the uniform regulations. Many female students have been issued warnings for too-short skirts or skorts, pants that are non-regulation or too tight, and non-regulation shoes. For males, too-long shorts appear to be the main problem along with shaving irregularities. There have been general announcements made this week to warn students that, starting Monday, August 31, if not in compliance with all uniform regulations, students will be fined.
For a complete written version of the regulations, see previous Falconers or the uniform section on our website.
Auditions for Fall Theatre Production
Auditions will be held next Thursday, September 3, and Friday, September 4, for the fall theatre production. Auditions will begin at 3:30 p.m. in room 407, and students in grades 6 through 12 are welcome to audition. Anyone who wishes to audition should prepare a 30-second to one-minute memorized monologue. Students will also be asked to do a “cold” reading with another student in a short scene from the play. The cast will be announced the week after Labor Day, and rehearsals will begin that week. Performance dates are set for October 23 and 24, 2009.
Until the performance rights are officially secured, the title cannot be announced, but it will be an American classic play appropriate for all ages. Students should listen to next week’s announcements and watch next week’s Friday Falconer for the title of the play, and students who are interested in participating in non-acting roles are welcome to sign up after the cast is announced. For more information, please contact Ms. Boarman at mboarman@bdhs.org.

President/Principal Roles
We are proud to announce an administration restructuring at Bishop Dunne. In order to further streamline service, promote the school, and emphasize advancement. Mrs. Kate Dailey is now the President of Bishop Dunne, and will continue to lead all advancement, grant writing, marketing, business and financial affairs. Mrs. Dailey remains the chief administrative officer of the school, while Mr. Patrick O’Sullivan, as Principal, handles the day to day operations. Dr. Veronica Alonzo will support Mrs. Dailey and Mr. O’Sullivan as Assistant Principal.
Grandparents' Day
Bishop Dunne is planning a Grandparents' Day on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at 9:00 a.m. in the auditorium. Refreshments will be served in the cafeteria following the program. Students will have an opportunity to spend time with their grandparents or another significant person in their lives. Photos will be taken and given as a memento of the day.
All students are asked to bring their grandparents' or significant person's address to school on Monday. Students will address pre-printed postcards that will be mailed to the grandparents announcing this day of celebration.
Junior and Senior Overnight Retreats
Campus Ministry would like to inform parents and students of the two overnight retreats for this year: the senior KAIROS retreat, which is a four-day, three-night retreat in mid-November; and the junior overnight leadership retreat in April or May. Because the retreats are overnight, there are extra fees associated with them. The senior retreat fee is $225 and the junior overnight retreat fee is $180. Both fees include lodging, meals, transportation, and supplies.
The retreats, though not mandatory, are an important part of each student’s Bishop Dunne experience and highly encouraged. If necessary, the Campus Ministry team is willing to help coordinate students’ effort at fundraising to help cover the retreat fees. Please contact Mr. Martin or Mr. Hurt in the Campus Ministry office if you would like any additional information.
Senior Presentation Mass
Bishop Dunne will introduce the Class of 2010 to the Oak Cliff community on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at 6:00 p.m. during the Senior Presentation Mass held at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. This annual event recognizes the role of the seniors, not only as the leaders of the student body of the school, but also as leaders within the Oak Cliff community through their service to many schools, hospitals, and other non-profit organizations within the Oak Cliff area. The Mass will be celebrated by Father Mike Dugan, Pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish.
The seniors have been serving the Oak Cliff community as part of the senior curriculum since the early 1970’s. Many elementary schools, both public and parochial, are served, including St. Elizabeth, St. Cecilia, Notre Dame School for Special Children, Maria Moreno Elementary, Mark Twain Elementary, Anson Jones Elementary, Leila Cowart Elementary, Adelle Turner Elementary, and Immaculate Conception. We are hoping to add at least one or two more schools to our list this year. Some of the organizations that the seniors serve are the Promise House (a home for runaway teens), both Charlton and Dallas Methodist Hospitals, Crescent Place Elderly Center, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the Vogel Alcove (a child care center that provides developmental, social and health services to children from homeless families). Last year, we added Metrocare Services of Dallas (a community mental health and mental retardation center serving the residents of Dallas) and the Hampton-Illinois Branch of the Dallas Public Library system to the list of organizations we serve. All in all, it should be a great year for our seniors to both give to and receive from the Oak Cliff community. The 6:00 p.m. Mass will be followed by a reception in the cafeteria at Bishop Dunne Catholic School. Parents and families are invited and encouraged to come and celebrate our senior class.
Mini-School Night
This year, we have two Mini-School Nights: one for the middle school on September 3, 2009; and one for the high school on September 10, 2009.
Please join us for this very important evening. Parents are invited to a technology discussion in Room 304 and Room 310 before Mini-School Night and classes will begin at 6:30 p.m. Parents will receive their child’s schedule via email and are asked to report to their child’s A block class by 6:30 p.m. at the latest. Parents will then receive a schedule so that they can follow a Red and a Blue school day. Parents will meet the teachers, and will be given an overview of the course, classroom expectations, and assessment procedures. Course outlines and syllabi, assessment procedures and timeline will be available through Edline. Mini-School Night is not a parent/teacher conference night, but it is a wonderful opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and learn more about the classroom and the curriculum. The evening will be over by 8:30 p.m.
Nationally Renowned Activist, Sonia Nazario, Is Visiting Bishop Dunne
Sonia Nazario will be visiting and speaking to the students during the day at Bishop Dunne Catholic School on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 and in the evening at St. Rita Catholic Community located at 12521 Inwood Rd. at 7:00 p.m.
Pulitzer Prize winner Sonia Nazario, has spent years speaking out against social injustice as a journalist for two nationally renowned newspapers: The Wall Street Journal and The L.A. Times.
Growing up in the U.S. and Argentina and with a Master’s degree in Latin American Studies from the University of California, Berkley, Mrs. Nazario has an extensive background in cultural studies and works to bridge social understanding. Her true-life chronicle of a Honduran boy’s journey to reach his mother in the U.S. inspired her to make the dangerous journey herself, to be better equipped to inform readers of the experience.
The newspaper series that Enrique’s Journey is based upon won her multiple awards including the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing and feature photography. With more than twenty years as a journalist, Mrs. Nazario continues to be an active public advocate and representative.
For the evening event, transportation from Bishop Dunne Catholic School to St. Rita’s Catholic Community will be provided free of charge for students, families, and faculty members who are interested. For more information, please contact Mrs. Lydia Torrez at ltorrez@bdhs.org or call 214 339 6561 extension 297. To RSVP for this event and to secure transportation, please send an email to advancement@bdhs.org and state how many seats will be needed.
Honduran Store
Bishop Dunne students have participated in an annual mission trip to Trujillo, Honduras for the last five years. Students are expected to raise the funds for this mission trip. Fundraising events are scheduled throughout the year to help supplement the cost for students and chaperones. In the past, this has included a Christmas tamale sale, a spring garage sale, kick ball tournaments, and free dress days. This year, the Honduras Mission Group has expanded their fundraising projects to include a Honduran Store. The items are hand-crafted by Honduran artisans. Items include jewelry made from coconut shells, and coffee beans, hand painted scenes from Honduras, and artwork made from the bark of native trees by the indigenous people of the rainforest. These items are on display in the window case in the 500 hallway next to the library. Suggested donations are listed on the items. To see them, please contact Mrs. Lydia Torrez at ltorrez@bdhs.org, Mrs. Wanda Boesch at wboesch@bdhs.org, or Ms. Kelly Pineda at kpineda@bdhs.org for more information on how you can make a purchase from the Honduran Store.
Community Book Fair, August 31, 2009, through September 4, 2009
Students from Bishop Dunne Catholic School will host a special Book Fair from Scholastic on August 31 through September 4, 2009, to help raise funds for the library and the purchase of new books.
The book fair will be open each day from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will feature a wide range of books for young teens and adults, including mystery and adventure novels, fantasy trilogies, sports guides, manga, and the latest bestsellers from more than 150 publishers. Parents, students, teachers, and the community are invited to attend. The fair will also be open on Thursday, September 3, 2009, during Mini-School Night, to give parents time to look at the selection.
Fair attendees can purchase books for themselves, and they can help build classroom libraries by purchasing books for teachers through the Classroom Wish List program. Please take time to come by and support Bishop Dunne. Volunteers are also needed to help during the school day. Please see Mrs. Norma Echavarria if you can help.

Hike for Life
The 36th annual Hike for Life, an event to raise awareness
of the dignity of life from conception to natural death, will be
held at seven sites in the Dallas area in September and October.
To foster more participation by youth, families and area ministries,
the hike will be held September 26, 2009, at John Paul II Catholic
High School, 900 Coit Road, Plano. The Dallas Hike will also be held
on the same day at White Rock Lake. Bishop Kevin Farrell of the Catholic
Diocese of Dallas has made it a key goal to foster youth participation
in Pro-Life activities saying, “We need to create a new culture
of life. We do that by building on our younger generations.”
Other
area Hikes for Life will be held October 3, 2009, at Audubon Park
in Garland, Campion Trails in Irving, Erwin Park in McKinney, Waxahachie
Creek Hike and Bike Trail in Waxahachie, and Breckenridge Park in
Richardson. Participants may also schedule their own personal Hike
for Life at the location of their choice.
The Hike for Life has been
a Knights of Columbus event since 1973. In addition to raising awareness
of the dignity of life, participants obtain sponsors to help raise
needed funds for crisis pregnancy centers in the Dallas area. Last
year, more than 500 participants raised more than $30,000 for the
centers.
You can register for the hike, download sponsor sheets,
and learn more by visiting the Hike for Life website at www.hikeforlifetexas.com.
Dallas Curfew
The Dallas City Council has passed daytime curfew hours for juveniles under the age of 17. Enforcement of this ordinance will begin on September 1, 2009. For a copy of the ordinance, please click here. The Police Department knows that our senior students will regularly leave campus during the school day to do their required service hours at other schools and/or other nonprofit organizations. This will not be a problem as we will issue unaccompanied senior students with documentation indicating our address, the name and
phone number of Mr. O’Sullivan, and their service destination.
If the student is stopped by the police, he or she must present this
information to the officer. Students from counties other than Dallas
who are unaccompanied in Dallas County during daytime curfew hours
will be subject to the Dallas ordinance. Students accompanied by
their parents during daytime curfew hours will not be stopped.
Please review the Dallas ordinance on the daytime curfew and read the August 25 letter issued to parents by Lt. Robert Hinton of the Dallas Police Department.

Volleyball
The Varsity Girls' team played matches against MacArthur and Dallas Christian, and they played in the Fort Worth Christian Pre-season Invitational Tournament. In the tournament, the girls’ record in pool play was 4-2, taking second place and placing them in the gold bracket. They went 2-2 on Saturday, finishing in the semi-finals of their bracket.
The girls wished farewell to their junior varsity coach, Brianna Champion, who went off to Texas State for her sophomore year.
The boys currently are practicing for their next home match against Fort Worth Country Day on Tuesday, September 1, 2009. They are a group of hard-working players, who improve every day. Their matches are fun to watch, and they would love to continue having supporters come out to watch them play.
The coaches recently completed middle school evaluations and are excited to have three teams again this year. Coaches Kelly Bush, Joanne Noller, and Nick Hurt will be working to ready the girls for the upcoming DPL season.

Alumni passes allow a 50% discount to all home athletic events. Passes do not include entry for tournaments or playoff games. You may contact Lydia Torrez at ltorrez@bdhs.org, or ext. 297 to request an alumni pass.
Middle School Football
The Middle School will field two football teams this season, Varsity (7th-8th grade) and Junior Varsity (5th-6th grade). Both teams have been working out since late July and are hoping to improve on last season's won-lost records. The varsity will have its first scrimmage against Mary Immaculate School on Saturday August 29, 2009, and a second scrimmage against the Home School Association on Thursday September 3, 2009.
The regular season will open for both teams on Sunday September 13, 2009. For more information, please contact Middle School Athletic Director Steve Guerrero at sguerrero@bdhs.org, or Varsity Head Coach Bill Lalla at wlalla@bdhs.org.
Baseball
The Bishop Dunne baseball team will be holding a Field Day on Saturday, September 5, 2009. We will be replacing the anchors for all the bases, as well as removing grass from the infield. We will also be placing windscreen around our new center and right field fences.
Please join us to help prepare the field. If it is possible, please bring some of the following items: Wheelbarrow; shovels; field rakes; trash bags; and tiller. The field day will count towards volunteer hours for parents, however, parents must be safe environment trained. |
