ACTIVE SPORTING

Text Box: The 07-08 season for boys’ and girls’ soccer is well underway. Both teams have been working hard to get on top. The boys had a great game on Nov. 15, with a blowout of 4-0—their first win of the season against Garland Christian. The girls also won their first game 1-0 against Fort Worth Christian.
The boys’ soccer team is made up of 35 young men who have lots of skills. “Our team is filled with talent,” shares Martin Arista. The team hopes to win many games this season.
“I am happy with the progress the team has made. I hope we can continue into January, and I hope we earn a playoff spot,” says Coach Hurt. Coach Hurt has a lot of faith in his team. He definitely sees potential in this group of young men.
The team has two great captains: Jerrett Williams and Chris Echavarria. The captains make the job of the coaches a little easier. They help keep the team working together, and who knows how the players feel when they are tired or exhausted better than their own teammates?
“I think we will do very well in district this year. We are hoping that it is a banner year,” states Coach Devine. Coach Devine also has a lot of faith in his players that they will do some great things this season.
The girls’ soccer team has also done fairly well this season. They have many young women who work hard at what they do. They work extra hard at practice so that when it comes to game time, they perform well. They have a strong team filled with lots of talent, and they are confident that they will succeed.
The girls’ soccer team also has two team captains: Seniors Felicia Cruz and Hannah Wangler. They also have a “Woman of the Match” for each game that they play. “Woman of the Match” occurs when the coaches pick a player who has played extremely well in the game to show them acknowledgment for their excellent performance.

The Dallas Mavericks began the 2007-2008 season back in October with a match-up against the defending Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers, who are led by guard/forward LeBron James. Jason Terry scored 24 points as the Mavs steamrolled the Cavs 92-74. That was then, and this is now, as the team will face many tough opponents in the month of January.

The team has added veteran forward Juwan Howard and 6’-11’’ rookie forward Nick Fazekas, as well as many other potential contributors. This time around guard Jason Terry has decided to take a different role, as he now comes off the bench.

“The Mavericks need to focus on defense, and they need to simply stop teams from scoring,” says sophomore Kendall Ross.

But do the Mavs have enough experience? “I think the Mavs have a good chance of going to the finals because they have more experience than younger teams,” says Mr.

McManus.

The Mavs have been criticized by the press for “not playing up to their potential.” They had losses to losing teams back in the beginning of the season that were absolutely unacceptable. The month of January marks a new beginning. It is time to simply win basketball games.

The Mavericks are currently 23-11 and will face Golden State, Miami, Minnesota, Detroit, and Seattle to open up the month of January. If you have not seen the Mavericks play this season, they will play Sacramento at home January 14. And with $2 ticket

nights, it is affordable for everyone to go see the Mavs in action.

Overall, both of the teams have done well so far this season.  They have put a lot of effort into trying to win games and to continue to learn more plays and skills.  The coaches, players, and the school community are very proud of where the team stands, and we all hope that they will only get better throughout the season. GO FALCONS!
