SCHOOLING OUTLOOKS

Text Box: A New Year’s Resolution is a commitment that a person makes to a habit he or she would like to take out of his or her life as the New Year begins. About 100 million Americans will try to make a change in their lives this New Year. A New Year’s Resolution is something that can be very easy for a person. For example, someone might be trying to quit biting their fingernails. On the other hand, a resolution can be something bold, like trying to quit smoking. The big question is… do people really follow their New Year’s Resolutions?
I conducted a survey asking a few students from Bishop Dunne if they had a New Year’s Resolution and if so, do they think that they will actually follow their New Year’s Resolutions from 2008 and on? I also asked if they have ever followed their New Year’s Resolutions from the previous years. Here are a few of their answers:
Sophomore Alexis Gillum said, “Focus!!! This upcoming year I resolve to put more effort and concentration in my schoolwork, and basketball games/practices.”
Sophomore Adam Steiger said, “For 2008, my New Year’s Resolution will be to go to the gym three or more times a week instead of one. Also, to lose an inch or two off of my waist.”
Sophomore Mary Sanchez said, “My New Year’s Resolution is to stay positive and mainly pass my classes in the 2008 school year.”
“The keys to making a successful resolution are a person’s confidence that he or she can make the behavior change and the commitment to making that change,” says Elizabeth Miller who is a candidate in psychology at the University of Washington. Just by reading this quote, I think that we can all take a step forward into our resolutions and actually commit to them in 2008.

Text Box: This holiday season, did that moist and delicious pound cake help you put on more than just a pound? Did that delectable Jell-O-mold add a little jiggle to your middle? What about that stuffing? Mmmhmm, I bet that scrumptious stuffing is competing with your belt buckle for that not-so-extra-room in your pants right now.
Junior Paolo Sintobin states, “For [the holidays], I enjoy a mouth-watering turkey, some delectable cornbread, tasty cranberry sauce, scrumptious homemade pumpkin bread, succulent stuffing, fluffy mashed potatoes, and [I] top it off with yummy pumpkin pie!”
Man, that’s a lot of grubbin’!
Junior Whitney Davenport states, “Sure, I gain weight. It isn’t [the holidays] if you don’t. [With] all the food I stuffed down, from turkey stuffing to pumpkin pie, added together I put on a couple of pounds although I may not show it.”
It’s okay, don’t feel bad. The damage can be reversed. But in order to cure your holiday dilemma, you must put down the bread rolls to lose those tummy rolls.
Don’t be discouraged! Losing weight doesn’t have to be boring or difficult. For example, try dancing.
Think about it, all of the “arms pumping, feet stomping, hips twisting, and of course, sweat dripping.” These movements are sure-fire ways to get fit and feel great.
“Dancing, experts say, burns calories, boosts energy, improves circulation and tones muscle—which leads to increased strength, endurance and flexibility,” states CNET Networks Inc.
Have no rhythm? Doesn’t matter! Feel you can’t dance all together? You’re kidding yourself. “These movers, groovers and shakers may not realize it, but the dancing that makes them feel good is also good for their bodies,” says Ebony Magazine.

Your body has built-in tendencies to sway, rock, or maybe just simply pat your foot to the floor when a constant rhythm is heard.  Although we all may not respond to certain rhythms as others would, I assure you that there is a tune out there that your body just can’t resist. Whether it be Lil’ Wayne, Fall Out Boy, Shania Twain, or Para Para, jammin’ is in your blood!

“Personally, I always try to shed easy pounds and dancing is a way I can do that. Dancing is fun, relaxing, and makes me feel my best,” states Junior Destiny Peters.

And for those of you who claim, “I don’t dance in public,” you’re in luck!

Who said anything about dancing in public? Go in your room, close the door, crank up the radio, and get to movin’! Don’t be ashamed, start groovin’!

Junior Cecilia Hernandez claims, “Dancing is a way for me to express myself, but at the same time it is fun and you subconsciously lose weight.”

Self expression is always relieving. Why not kill two birds with one stone by making your body and your psyche happy?

So, what are you waiting on? Let’s shake a turkey tail feather! Dance that holiday weight away!
