Prom is dancing its way up to the seniors’ doorsteps, and dates are going fast, so grab yours while you can! But remember, you cannot expect a “yes” every time. Asking someone out to prom takes talent, skill, and imagination.

Want to impress your girlfriend or boyfriend with your creativity? Here are the eight most up-to-date and original methods that are sure to get a “Definitely!” from that special someone. Choose the one that has “you” written all over it, and go for it!

8. Picture Perfect Puzzle: Take a photograph of you and your beau and write “We fit together perfectly, would you go to prom with me?” The best way to do this is by downloading the picture onto your computer and using a program that will allow you to add the text. Then, print it off and cut the picture into enough pieces to make it fun, not frustrating.
7. Creative Candy: Choose your sweetie’s favorite sweet treat, and if you have the time, spell out “It would be so sweet if you went to prom with me.” Show them, and see their response… If you want to get really creative go to www.mymms.com and customize your own M&M’s. Select your honey’s favorite color(s). Next—these tiny chocolate treats can only fit so many words—type in your message: “Will U” “Go 2” “Prom W/” “Me?” Packaging starts at $4 for a 1.7 oz. bag, but if that sweetie of yours is worth it, I recommend the 7 oz. bag for $11.99.

6. Wanted Posters: First, get a piece of computer paper. Write “Wanted: Prom Date” at the top. Then, put your date-to-be’s name and a picture of him or her on the sheet. Below that, put a silly reward and your cell phone number. Photocopy the flyer as many times as you would like. Next—and this is important—politely ask Mrs. Dailey or Mr. Johnson if you can post your wanted posters around the school for a day or two. Strategically place them near the usual locations your cutie hangs out, and wait for a response.

5. Scavenger Hunt: This invite takes

a bit of thinking on your part. Leave clues, starting on the lucky person’s locker, directing them to various spots around the school. Sneak them onto their backpack or purse when they aren’t looking, ask their teachers to pass along a note towards the end of class—anything you can think of. But remember, by the end of the day, the clues should lead straight to you, at which point you can say, “No more games, would you go to prom with me?”

4. Romantic Writing: If creative writing is your forte, this one’s for you. Write a sweet letter, poem, or song explaining the reasons why you want to go to prom with someone. Make sure that it would make your cutie melt. I’ll leave this up to all of you artistic souls pouring your thoughts right onto the paper for that special someone.

3. Endearing Décor: Say “Goodbye” to bland, blue lockers for a day! Come to school early one morning and create a masterpiece on his/her locker. Crafts, from construction paper to balloons, are welcome, as long as they can come off easily at the end of the day. A burst of color and creativity on a locker will stand out in his or her mind and ensure a definite “yes.”

2. Public Proposal: Whether over the morning announcements or Talon TV, if you have the guts to ask someone to prom in front of the entire school, go for it! This risky maneuver shows confidence and courage, and your cutie will be sure to remember it.

Don’t forget to ask permission from Mrs. Dailey. And please, make sure to come up with a short script—stage fright could hit and you can’t back out at the last minute.

 1. Personal Request: Everything is better in person. Face to face is probably the scariest way to ask someone out, but it’s also the best. The classic method of a simple “Hey, can I talk to you for a second?” and then once you’re alone, “Will you go to prom with me?” is the surest way to catch that cutie.

Whether you’re a guy or girl, don’t be afraid to ask the person you’ve had your eye on—unless they’re taken. Be innovative, take the little details you know about them—favorite color, number, candy, whatever—and put it into a plan of action. Choose one of the items from this list and make it your own. Otherwise, you’ll be going to prom all alone.
