Late or Early? Who should start school when? By: Leslie Rewis |
Bishop Dunne is radically different compared to last year. The biggest change in school policy has been the 8:30 a.m. start for all students. Originally, this change was made to allow students more rest and for students to attend tutoring in the mornings. But is the plan really working? Is it still necessary? And if so, for whom? The main issue cited with late start has been that students are not using the extra time wisely. While many students still come in at 8 a.m., the majority merely walk around and talk as opposed to working on their homework or attending tutoring. And students still fall asleep in class. So much for getting enough rest. In a survey distributed to 150 Bishop Dunne students, 85% said that they loved the late start, 10% said they liked it, and 5% said they didn’t care. In response to “Should we keep the late start next year?” 97% said yes and 3% said no. So what exactly do students do with the extra time in the morning? 73% said that they work, go to tutoring, or do homework. 15% said that they sleep. 12% said they walk around the halls and talk. While these questions are indeed interesting and relevant, the major issue at hand is which grades should have a late start and which shouldn’t. 57% said that middle school should start late, and 43% said that they should start early. 90% said that 9th grade should start late and 10% said that they should start early. 94% said that 10th grade should start late, while 6% said that they should start early. Finally, 95% said that 11th and 12th grade should start late while 5% said they should start early. So what will happen to late start? Who knows. Tune in next year for the results. |

Let’s Dance! ...In the Cafeteria? Why school dances are held where you eat By: Sydney Luper |
Remember the Halloween Dance? The Victory Party after the first home football game? The Valentine’s Day Midnight Roses Dance? Each of these dances was hosted by the FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). While students always want to have more dances, they are not too pleased about them being in the cafeteria. Some people say, “The dance is in the cafeteria? Psh, I am not going to that!” or “Why don’t they just have them in the gym?” Fortunately, not everybody thinks that way. Many students go to support the FCA or just to have fun. The FCA has hosted numerous dances such as, The Valentines Day Dance-Midnight Roses, The Halloween Dance, and the Victory Party after the first home football game. “We could have dances in the gym, but it would be very time consuming to set it up and the basketball games are often going on in the gym, so we just don’t,” says Erica Milton, president of FCA. “The cafeteria is a great place to have them; it’s just the right amount of space, and it’s easier to decorate.” With the many people saying, “The cafeteria? Are you serious?” you would think that not that many people would show up…right? Erica states, “No, I’m never disappointed because a lot of students come out and support us and we usually have great turnouts anyway, like for the Midnight Roses dance we had a lot of outsiders come and we had a live DJ that was good. We always have fun.” Even though most dances are in the cafeteria, the “important” dances are in formal places. Example: Homecoming was at the Adams Mark Hotel. So next time you ask, “Hey! Why are all the dances in the cafeteria?” now you know. I suggest that next time there is a dance, go! Don’t turn your nose up at it because of the location. Remember: you do eat there five days a week. |
